Can you avoid algae blooms and having to shock your pool?

When I first moved into this house a year ago and had the pool opened by a local company they told me to leave the pump on 24/7. After finding this forum, getting off the pool store chemical roller coaster, using the TFP method, and doing a lot of research I find that running the pump that much...

    +1 to TFP winterizing

Same here. I was super excited to open my cover to find crystal clear water. I made a thread about it as well a couple days ago. I plan to get the pump and equipment going this weekend. Stoked!

Just uncovered the pool for the first time since winterization...

And I'm impressed!! I had a company come out to close the pool first week of November last year, just before it got really cold. This year I'll schedule them for early October. Anyway, I made sure the pool cover closed all the way to keep out leaves and put rags in the openings at the corners of...

Chlorine went down to 0 - must I shock?

While you're at it order the 50ppm CYA standard. That way you have a direct comparison as to how the dot should look. Helped me out for sure.

Chlorine went down to 0 - must I shock?

I went through the same thing. Started with a perfectly clear pool that couldn't hold chlorine. 60gallons and a couple weeks later I was finally able to hold chlorine overnight. Read my thread if it makes you feel better: New pool owner and first test results from my test kit

It was the UnionGap place. I find the experience in that store is very dependent on which employee you work with.

New pool owner and first test results from my test kit

I took a water sample into the pool store to get tested for metals. I had them do a full work up to see how they compared. I had just added a gallon of bleach after FC fell to 8.5ppm (a bit overkill), and I had also just tested PH which was still 7.6. FC after that gallon of bleach was 12ppm...

Looks like I'm good on CH. The Jandy manual states CH needs to be between 200-400ppm.

Regarding the CH I thought I was okay since I have a vinyl pool. Didn't think about the heater. I'll check the paperwork that came with it. Good to know I don't have to mess with TA or PH for now. thanks for the help!

As of this morning FC has finally drifted to below 10. So I ran some tests mostly to get a more accurate PH reading. TA seems very high. Should I wait until PH drifts up higher and then add some MA to bring it down to 7.3 or so? FC 9.5 CC <.5 TA 180 PH 7.6 CH 250 CYA 80

Calculating Pool Volume Based on Chemistry

I did the same thing. The local pool store had my pool in their records from the previous home owners as 25k gallons. After way overshooting my target FC a few times I did the math based on fresh chlorine additions to the pool and testing an hour later. To back this up I also broke out the tape...

    I made a pool logger

I registered on poollogger.com last night but haven't received a confirmation email yet. Does it usually take this long or did I screw up? Nothing in my inbox or junk folder. Thx!

Maybe the guys that fixed the leak turned the filter to "closed" and forgot to turn it back to "filter"?

New pool owner and first test results from my test kit

11 hours later at 5pm and FC is only down to 19ppm. CC is zero. That's only 2.5ppm used with the pool sitting all day uncovered in the mid 90's hot sun. It might be a couple days before I can accurately test PH again, lol. I also tested CYA and it's down to 80ppm. I have the 50ppm CYA reference...

So maybe you guys can help me identify what model of sand filter I have? With the house paperwork came the manual for mine, but I'm not sure the actual model. It's a generic manual for a whole line of filters. It's a Sand Dollar brand filter I know for sure based on the manual but there is no...

I love this forum. Super easy to navigate the wealth of info needed to maintain a pool the TFP way. I learned more in a week than I did in four weeks going to the pool store! Thanks guys!

Passed the OCLT! Last night at 11pm FC was 21.5ppm. This morning at 615am it was still 21.5. CC was zero. Woot!

New pool owner and first test results from my test kit

Also good to know! Thx! Although, ironically, the last time I did a backwash and refill is when I passed the OCLT with a .5ppm FC loss. lol While I was backwashing and the returns weren't churning up the pool surface I took a pic as it looked so nice and clear... I dropped a good 2" of water...

New pool owner and first test results from my test kit

Awesome, thx! Good to know. So I just tested my FC/CC. It's 6pm so it's been 12 hours since the last test. The pool has been sitting in direct UV and today got decently hot into the low 90s. FC dropped from 32ppm to 26.5ppm. I assume it's normal to see decent FC loss when you're that high...

So it is possible to test using 5ml sample? Less powder and 1 drop = 1 FC or is it some other formula?

    Cloudy Pool

Would it be possible to hook up the vacuum hose to the skimmer and keep the other end down in the water? I was actually thinking about this for my own use. I have a valve to shut off the skimmer and/or main drain, but I like to know all options.

New pool owner and first test results from my test kit

25ml test would be brutal on reagent use at that FC level, lol. Three tests would probably kill a 2oz bottle. I was very careful when counting drops. But over the course of 60+ drops, as said, the disparity between them probably comes into play. I would have preferred an even smaller sample...

New pool owner and first test results from my test kit

So I dropped from 34ppm FC last night to 32ppm FC this morning. Based on this thread: https://www.troublefreepool.com/threads/104461-(NOT-URGENT-)-)-Ideal-Predicted-Chlorine-loss-rate I'm gonna call off the SLAM. It seems like 1ppm is way too difficult to hit at my SLAM levels. I've had FC at...

New pool owner and first test results from my test kit

I guess I didn't read that section of pool school. Last backwash I did 5mins and then rinse 1min. Based on water level drop I figured about 600 gallons was pumped out.
  27. T

New pool owner and first test results from my test kit

I've been doing the CYA test using the tap water and multiply by two method. After the last backwash and refill I come up with 90ppm. I'm not in a situation where I can pump to waste 6000 gallons of water, so lowering my CYA will just have to happen over time with longer backwashes. I have...

New pool owner and first test results from my test kit

I decided to keep the pool at SLAM level all day yesterday and do another OCLT overnight just to be sure. Tested at 10pm FC was 32.5. This morning at 6am FC was 29.5. Ugh. Brought it back up to 39ppm. I'll do another OCLT. Any reason why it might have regressed?

New pool owner and first test results from my test kit

Okay, much better news this morning. Yesterday I kept FC levels up, swept the pool, did a 5 minute backwash of the filter, and topped up the water afterwards. Last night at 11pm FC was 38ppm. This morning at 6:30am FC is at 37.5ppm. CC has been below .5ppm for several days now. Sometimes zero...
