    Available chlorine vs sodium hypochlorite

So my normal supplier of pool shock switched brands and instead of 10% sodium hypochlorite on the old brand, the new brand says 15% available chlorine and 12.5% sodium hypochlorite. My guess is I need to calculate using sodium hypochlorite, but I wanted to ask to be double sure. On the bright...

Yeah, that simplepool is a pretty good alternative. I've noticed a couple inconsistencies between it and the pool calculator.

    Pool calculator Android app

I was wondering about the pool calculator app for Android, or another app. Is the calculator app worth it? I downloaded a free app called pool pal, but the amount of bleach varies between it's calculations and that of poolcalculator.com. Does anyone have any experience with this app or another...

    Are CYA Tests Unreliable?

From my limited experience on here it can take 3-4 days for the CYA to fully dissolve into the water, and up to a week to fully register on the test. So wait another 5 days or so to retest. According to the pool calculator it should be boosted up to 30 ppm. Best of luck!!!

First test of year after new liner and refill

I have a cartridge filter, not sand. I cleaned my cartridge as good as possible(still a little dirty, but definitely usable) and have 2 new ones on the way. Thanks, I will wait until this evening to add more bleach. But am I correct in needing to bring it to shock level? The water is clear...

Pool unopened for 3+ years, need some help!!!

Here are a current set of numbers FC 12 CC .5 PH 7.5 TA 160-180 (at 160 it had just turned a light pink, at 180 it was fairly dark and didn't get any darker no matter how many more drops i added) CH 200 CYA 30 I got in the pool yesterday evening to see what the bottom of the pool felt like...

    Great Value Bleach vs Clorox

Is great value bleach the same concentration as clorox? I also read a post where someone was saying something about bleach being super cheap at Aldi's. Is there bleach comparable? From what I understand Clorox is 6% correct? If someone could tell me what the others are, so I could make the...

Thanks for the confidence!!! I didn't really think it was too bad, that is until I was itching like crazy! Then I got a little freaked out!!!

Swimming in a pool with algae and no chlorine

When I got in, the were probably no cc's because there had been no FC for years. lol, I was mainly wondering if anyone else had experienced this or knew if it was algae causing my itching or something else. The itching went right away after scrubbing down in a nice, hot shower, but it's just my...

Swimming in a pool with algae and no chlorine

Oh yeah, I've been keeping my pool at or near shock lever for a week now, running filter 24/7, following pool school, pool calculator, and all other instructions from forum members. I was just curious what was making me itch.

Swimming in a pool with algae and no chlorine

I finally got time to try to open my pool this year, it had been closed for the whole 2 years that I have owned the house, and I have no clue how many years before I bought it. So needless to say the pool was very dark green with a ton of leaves, twigs, pine needles, and who knows what else on...

How to determine power consumption of my pool pump.

Cherie, I am running my pump 24/7 because I am "turning my green swamp into a sparkling oasis." I won't always keep it on, the system is rated to turn over 24k gallons in 8 hours. As soon as my pool is clear, I will only run it 8. Thanks again for everyone for your input. I truly appreciate it!!!

Pool unopened for 3+ years, need some help!!!

I just put the 44 oz that the pool calculator said I need to raise my CYA by 20 in two socks hanging in front of the return jet. I am going to borrow my dad's sand filter, he thinks it is 200 lbs, to hopefully clean my pool faster since the catridge seems to clog so fast. I was wondering what...

How to determine power consumption of my pool pump.

I have been running my pool pump 24/7 for better than a week, and I just started wondering how much I can look forward to my electric bill jumping up. It is a 1 hp Hayward pump. I'm sure I will need more technical details from my pump, but if someone could give me some kind of formula or...

Pool unopened for 3+ years, need some help!!!

It would make sense that I would lose some due to changing and cleaning the filter cartridges 3-4 times a day, but I would think that it would show at least some reading on the CYA test. When the tube is full to the brim, I can still see the dot pretty easily. According to the pool calculator, 4...

Pool unopened for 3+ years, need some help!!!

I tested my CYA level again today and it still showed <20, and by what I remember being told already, I need to count that as 0. I added 4 lbs of stabilizer on Saturday the 19th (slowly pouring some in front of the return jet, some down skimmer, and about half scattering it around the pool). I...

Pool unopened for 3+ years, need some help!!!

Last night at midnight my FC was 11 and CC 2, I did both tests twice. The I tested at 650 this morning, sun was already up, but the pool was mostly shaded, and the FC read 11.5 and CC 2.5. I can understand how my cc went up overnight, but not my FC! My pump was left running overnight, and I...

    Where to test?

I always take it from elbow deep. I guess halfway around the pool or maybe 2/3's of the way around would probably be the place with the least circulation.

    Cinder Block Walls?

Thanks for the opinions! Feel free to keep them coming. Melt, I grew up in Ava and now live in Steeleville. That's kinda funny you went to high school in Carbondale, small world as they say!!!

    Where to test?

Yeah, after I tested a few times, I started thinking by the skimmer/return wasn't the best place, but of course that is where the pool is closest to the back door for me!!!

    Cinder Block Walls?

I was looking into building my own inground pool, I really doubt that I will unless I buy land and build a new house, but you never know. Anyway, I seen several places showing people building the walls out of regular cinder blocks. I was just wondering if there was anyone on here that had any...

    Where to test?

Where exactly in your pool should you test. As my sig says, I have 27' Round 4' deep pool, for reference I have 18 top rails. I have been taking the water for the test anywhere between right by the skimmer/return, to 1/3 to 1/2 way around the pool away from the skimmer/return. Thank you for your...

Pool unopened for 3+ years, need some help!!!

What is the lowest that I should allow my FC level drop to during this procedure? So far the lowest has been 9, with my target being 13. Mostly stays at or above 10 before I get to add more bleach. I am mainly concerned about this because I have to go to work tomorrow afternoon at 2 pm, and will...

How long after adding chlorine to test?

Talk about fast replies!!! Yeah, I'm in the middle, well more like the beginning, of turn your green pool into a sparkling oasis. So, I am shocking every 2-3 hours. After just 1 hour I only need to add like 1 qt or less, so I wait til it drops a little lower so I am adding a reasonable amount of...
