Effectiveness of enzymes for scum- high bather load

Thanks for the info. I will pass the UV sterilizer info on to the powers that be. Yes, we take great precautions on crypto and Cdiff. I am meticulous about cleanliness in my therapy pool, hence the question about scum. Not only is it unsightly, it's a breeding ground for the nasties. I do use a...

Effectiveness of enzymes for scum- high bather load

The pool is a PT (physical therapy) pool, set at 92 deg, occasionally gets as high as 96. The system is 10 years old. Originally was Cl- but we switched to Br- last spring. We are switching back to Cl- as my colleague is having issues with the Br-. That being said, I have no idea what the ozone...

Effectiveness of enzymes for scum- high bather load

I looked up white mold and it doesn't look like it's what it is. Our temp is maintained at 92 deg and Br- is maintained 6-10 ppm. Sides scrubbed every day, filter changed and chemically cleaned once per week. Pump runs 24/7 per Tx health code.

Effectiveness of enzymes for scum- high bather load

We drain once a month, do partials every 2 weeks. Package says to apply with sanitizer below 5ppm. It does not say how long the sanitizer needs to be at that level. Health department wants 3-5ppm, so that is in range and should not affect sanitation. We have no issues with slime, just oils from...

    Can't get Bromine above 0!

I would add the bleach and some crushed tabs as well. When I started up my pool with Br, it took awhile for the concentrations to increase. I used the starter, but had to add a lot more Br into the system as well. I have a high bather load, though.

Effectiveness of enzymes for scum- high bather load

My therapy pool is suffering from a lot of bioload (think scum, oily residue). I have used some scum sponges, but they are just not cutting it. I want to use an enzyme additive, but unsure of the effectiveness for the cost. Anyone have any experience with these products? I am looking at Orb-3. I...

    Chemical help, please!

The chemicals you add depend on your test results. You want your Br- to be in the 5-10ppm range. Shock (both MPS and dichlor) will get you there. I am highly allergic to MPS so I use bleach and diclor in my therapy pool. Never add anything without testing first.

    Can't get Bromine above 0!

Did you use a bromine starter? If not, then it may take awhile for the bromine to show up. You can crush some tabs and put in the bottom of spa.

    Water turning brown with bromine

Everything looked good today. The main difference is I added significantly more bromine tabs to the hopper. I did not have the mid-day dip. Yay! I think I have all the kinks worked out.

I appreciate the disclaimer. You may not be qualified, but you have certainly given my more information than those who supposedly are.

    Water turning brown with bromine

I don't have the bottles in front of me, but I think I remember them saying R-0001 and R-0002 for the halide test (5 drops of each into the first tube for magenta/pink comparison). And yes, I don't think we have the right equipment, and I am working on that. Could it be because I don't have...

    Water turning brown with bromine

The test kit I got is the magenta one where I add 2 reagents to get the halide reading. It says FAS-DPD on the bottles and the label. Next q:- how do I keep the Br from tanking in the middle of the day? I will start off with 10ppm and by noon, it will be down to 6, then continues to fall. I...

    Water turning brown with bromine

No. My boss ordered the Taylor basic FAS- DPD with the 2 reagents for the halide. The K1000.

    Water turning brown with bromine

My FAS-DPD test kit came in this morning. It's just the halide and pH though. Tested and everything looks good (after a morning of pool patients). Br at 6, pH at 7.6.

    Water turning brown with bromine

You are correct- I cannot add chemicals with patients in the pool. I control Br throughout the day through the feeder- I can adjust to add more if needed. I do not think my feeder can handle liquid. I can see now, that a commercial system was not put in when the spa/pool was installed 10 years...

    Water turning brown with bromine

Yes! Incredibly helpful and answers a lot of questions on how I was unsuccessful with the chlorine as well. Our regs state I only have to test once per day. However, therapy industry best practices state testing should be done every 2 hours, which I do. I was able to do the Bromine load...

    Water turning brown with bromine

Thank you, MPurcell, that was very helpful. I was aware of most of what you put in the post as far as NaBr not being a sanitizer and needed to build a bank, etc. Yes, Oxysheen is an MPS oxidizer. Yes, we have A LOT of waste in the pool on the daily. Any help with that? I usually do a good job of...

    Water turning brown with bromine

This morning my water tests as Br- 10ppm and pH 6.5. Added pH+ and turned my jets on.

    Water turning brown with bromine

Yes, I added sodium bromide, per the instructions on the bottle, which amounted to 4 cups to a freshly filled pool. I also put 4 1" tabs in the feeder, two of which dissolved over the weekend. As stated in the question, the bromine tested low before the shock. Isn't that the point of shock- to...

    Water turning brown with bromine

Hi, I just converted my therapy pool to Br from Cl this past weekend. My water tested at 6ppm Br, 7.4 pH this morning when we opened it. No other water tests done. When I closed the pool for the day, water tested at .5 Br and 7.6 pH. I shocked with Bioguard Oxysheen and the water turned brown...

Therapy spa switching from Chlorine to bromine

I re-read the thread, and it is much clearer. To clarify, I have an ozonator, automatic feeder for Cl/Br, and typically shock with oxysheen every other day. I test the water for TC and pH every two hours, based on state law for public pools/spas.

Therapy spa switching from Chlorine to bromine

After reading the thread on bromine in spas, I am super confused. I run a therapy pool with approx 3200 gal water with average temp93 deg. I treat up to 20 patients per day, at an hour to an hour and a half per session, 5 days per week. So, we get a lot of oils in the water. I have a Sta-rite...
