Latest test readings - help with optimizing Cl usage

I find that my pH usually runs around 7.8 - sometimes down to 7.5 - is this too high? What problems might it cause? When I add my daily 3-4 quarts of 6% bleach, it seems to run up the pH one level on the test kit "scale". If I shock, it runs it up 2 levels. Always seems to settle down after a...

New to BBB, Leaving town for 3 days

Another reason for leaving the pump off would be the risk of something breaking and the pump running with no water. We recently had a fitting (2" PVC to 1.5" screw into the filter) crack - when the pump ran, there was spray from the crack, and within a few hours, the pool ran down to the point...

Latest test readings - help with optimizing Cl usage

Hi everyone!! I almost can't believe it. One month later, we still have clear, sparkling water! After all the trouble I had just 1 year ago, this is soooo amazing. Thank you all so much for your help! :-D Now, I want to get things optimized for the season, I'm wondering how much Cl I should...

Cheap source for Calcium Chloride.. Right product?

This seems to be a pretty cheap source for Calcium Chloride.. This is what I want, right? http://www.gemplers.com/product/CACL2/5 ... ide-Flakes $32, including shipping, for a 50lb bag of 77% flakes. I thought that was pretty good. Local pool store wants $75 for 50 lbs. Ridiculous.

    Rattling in the sand filter

I have a similar rattle. Only way I have been able to get it to stop is to put some back-pressure on the filter by closing up one of the valves to a return (i.e. increasing pressure). I haven't opened it up yet, but it sounds like air in the MPV. Wondering if it is a bad seal in the MPV? Did...

Water is looking blue and sparkly.. So happy! Now, what is next? Here are my readings - I added the Baking Soda...

Newbie with a test kit - am I headed in the right direction?

Replaced water to lower CYA - Validation of next steps.. Thanks everyone for the advice so far!! We pumped out 60-70% of the water and replaced. The green is gone, and we have sparkling blue water and white walls (not greenish) in our pool for the first time!! (Last year was a high CYA...

Newbie with a test kit - am I headed in the right direction?

Ok.. I went a little aggressive with the draining. Figured it would be better to get 60% of the water out while I was at it. I figure better to get the CYA down to 20-30 and work up, rather than being frustrated with high chlorine needs. It's going to take a while to fill back up at 10 gpm, vs...

Newbie with a test kit - am I headed in the right direction?

Thanks, everyone.. I was looking at the shock chart and wondering whether it would be better to drain 1/2 and refill to lower CYA rather than buying all that bleach. Sounds like that is the concensus. Do I need to worry about anything when removing that much water for a plaster pool? Don't...

Newbie with a test kit - am I headed in the right direction?

Hi, everyone! This will be my first season on BBB - started late last season and liked what I was seeing. I'm looking forward to being a full BBB guy this season, but need some guidance. Here are my specs: 16'x36' rectangular, 3.5' shallow, 6.5' deep = 21,600 gallons (give or take a few...
