Considering an in-ground vinyl pool kit any tips?

Hi I am in Southern California and my partially in-ground "above-ground" oval is now over 30 years old. Got my money's worth and have poured a lot into it (ha, no pun intended) over the years. But it's time to upgrade. Am financially challenged so a gunite type pool is out of the question...

Has anyone used the solar pro xf, a flat panel solar heater?

Re: Has anyone used the solar pro xf, a flat panel solar hea  Your post really made me laugh. Well, have found the two holes in the Fafco 4'x20' panel. I thought there were more, so was happy to find only two. I am using spray on rubberized undercoating. I have the repair kit with...

Has anyone used the solar pro xf, a flat panel solar heater?

Re: Has anyone used the solar pro xf, a flat panel solar hea Yes, that's what I suspect, Jason. I can't see how something that small can be effective on a 15'x25' oval pool. I did call the manufacturer and they insist it works... lol. Well, what else are they GOING to say, right? If they...

Has anyone used the solar pro xf, a flat panel solar heater?

I can find no reviews of this product. But it sounds promising. However they are the same people that had the dome tubing smaller solar heater that when it first came out didn't get very good reviews. Here is a link to the product. Sure would be nice to replace the 4'x20' Fafco panel which...

Help! Pool Cover Stained Top Rails

Are these resin or metal top rails? If metal I'd paint them. Every spring I use rustoleum white enamel on the top rails to keep them rust free and looking like new. If they're resin have you done a search online for stain remover on resin? Good luck.

D.E. filter vs. Sand or cartridge filters

Considering how high our electric is in Los Angeles, I could use the more energy efficient cartridge! I do love the D.E. filter, but again, never had anything else!

D.E. filter vs. Sand or cartridge filters

Sounds like cartridge is the way to go. I won't miss having to backwash and replace the D.E. that's for sure. They sound a lot easier to clean!

D.E. filter vs. Sand or cartridge filters

LOL, I realize I read it wrong -- of course the D.E. filters out the most junk! So I think I'd like to stay away from sand filters. Go with another D.E. or try a cartridge! Yup, I'd rather just hose something off than do all that backwashing and messing around with adding more D.E. Thanks...

D.E. filter vs. Sand or cartridge filters

Sounds like a cartridge does the best filtering and the D.E. next best or am I reading this wrong?

D.E. filter vs. Sand or cartridge filters

I have a 15'x25' oval pool and it's about 30 years old. It's about time to replace. I am looking at same size pools and they come with filters and pumps. All seem to offer sand filters but I have always had D.E. filters. Which is better? What are the differences? Thanks for any help on...

    Solar heater repair.....

I had my solar panel in operation for two years all year round (am in Southern California, so no freeze situation to worry about) however at the end of the swimming season 2011 it sprung some leaks and it was my fault. It slipped off the rack and the bottom was cut by some nails in the rack...

looking to upgrade for next year and have a few questions

Re: looking to upgrade for next year and have a few question I know I shouldn't have, but I laughed myself silly reading this poor guy's story! I have to say I was impressed with his perserverance! A lesser soul would have gone postal! That said I am amazed that my pool has withstood the...

    new pool Petaluma Ca

I love to watch pool builds on this site. One word of caution: I hope that magnolia tree isn't planted too close to the pool! I have one in my backyard and in the summer it drops a huge amount of leaves every day! Mine is just far enough from the pool that the leaves don't go right in, but all...

what to do about bees in the pool?

I just skim them off and enter the pool and watch for new ones hovering trying to get a "sip" of water and shoo them off. The ones that land in the water get fished out. They do prefer the water during the sunniest part of the day. I also observed they are especially drawn to...

Solar Heater installation on a rack instructions?

Oh I have to agree about 90 degree water! When we get the really hot Santa Ana winds here in Sept/Oct, the temps go over 100 for a few days and my pool is a bathtub! It's been as high as 92 degrees. Not refreshing AT ALL!!! That's why 80 is perfect for me. Just can't imagine why you'd want...

*** UPDATED *** AGP install pics

Re: AGP install pics Your children are adorable!!! And great reasons to put up a pool!! That's a great set-up -- I love the spacious deck, bet the kids love to jump off that deck into the pool (ssshhh I know they're not supposed to do that but I've never been able to stop 'em, and as long as...

    why bury an AGP?

Thank you. Sad thing about the muskin is they went out of business so I can't find replacement parts. So if something goes, like a top rail, then I'll have to put in a new pool. Which won't be too bad, after all, I really got a lot of bang for the buck with this one! I thought mine was...

    Oldest AG Pool?

Well, I would love to take credit for that lakeside pool but that's not mine! Look further up. But isn't it the most gorgeous AGP with deck and view you've ever seen? I'm jealous!!! It's Titus's parents' pool! Nice!!!

    why bury an AGP?

There are a lot of reasons to bury or partly bury an AGP. My main reason was the property taxes would go way up. Right now am protected by an old Prop 13 law, otherwise I'd never be able to keep the house my mother left me and that I grew up in. If I put an in-ground permanent pool in my prop...

Solar Heater installation on a rack instructions?

Thanks, hanau -- I did see that thread. It gave me ideas on how I might adapt the rack. It has to fit into a 4' space that runs along the side of a fence for about 20'. Matt4x4 I never saw yours. That's a good one too. I guess I'm just worried about making sure it's all level. I'm in Los...

Solar Heater installation on a rack instructions?

What I like about your install is that it doesn't look like it's flat, right. So it doesn't have to be perfect to work! That's helpful. I wish I could just lay it down alongside the pool but I just don't have the space. Thanks for the photo!

    Installing solar heater panels

Am trying to follow the thread here. So if I install my panels at the same level as the return line/pool line then I wouldn't have to worry about the water in the panels backflowing into the filter? If not, then do those check valves come with the solar panels or is it another extra you have...

    Oldest AG Pool?

Wow, am impressed with some of the ages of the AGPs here. And I thought mine was old! Mine is a Muskin steel wall that was installed in 1982, gulp, which makes it 28 years old! I can't believe it! I'm on my 3rd overlap liner. Each liner has lasted 10 years. My first liner was...

Solar Heater installation on a rack instructions?

Hi Everybody  I have searched the forums but guess I'm not doing a very good search job and need a lot of help putting up a solar panel. Have found a few posts here and there showing racks built and suggestions on hooking up the solar panels. But I would love to have instructions on how...

32'x16' Doughboy with partial bury under construction

Boy, it seems everytime someone from Texas puts in a pool they have a HUGE backyard! Can't believe that's all yours! Amazing to have all that space. I love that this pool is building so fast! Can't wait to see it finished. Are you going to put a deck around the pool? That's what I did with...

Skimmer Basket Floats out when pump is off.

 Seems we all solved the floating basket the same way! I had a small smooth oval rock until I lost it. Then I put a piece of broken brick pottery in there as it can lean against the inside of the basket and doesn't cover the bottom. I wouldn't go to a lot of trouble. Just find a rock...

    suction too strong while vacuuming?

@dmanb2b, as long as it's not the Baracuda Ranger Automatic Pool Cleaner! After years of having the Aqua Critter, Diver Dans etc. (we're talking YEARS of solid service) I saw the Baracuda Ranger and thought, well, why not try something different. Not only was it time-consuming to get into the...
