Using Calcium Hypochlorite and trouble keeping the PH down

I thought it was OK to add the Cal-Hypo, and I didn't find anything on the site about it raising PH - I do want to follow the TFP principles as it has been working great for me! I needed some more CH so the increase there was good for me. I just wasn't sure if there was a way to get the TA down...

Using Calcium Hypochlorite and trouble keeping the PH down

After my "Freshman Year" in TFP Pool School, and a clear pool all summer after your help, I got the pool clear and clean quickly and easily this spring! However, I did get tired of bottles of bleach, needed some CH in the pool, and the price of Cal-Hypo was good (50 lb buckes from...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

I didn't change the DE yet, and was thinking about where the algae is hiding. It seems that if there is algae in the filter, but the filter isn't running at night, it couldn't be using up the chlorine there - does that make sense? I am leaning towards the waterfall causing the trouble, with...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

I wanted to check back in with a couple of things. The pool is looking great, the water is nice and clear and I have not found any algae hiding anywhere else nor in corners when I brush. I have been keeping the FC in the 4-6 range, adding bleach in the morning and at night. - I am using about...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

It was a 90 degree very sunny day, and I just re-tested (4:30 PM) and have FC 15.5 CC .5. It seems like it went down a little less during the day today, though I think it was hotter and sunnier so hopefully getting the algae out of the lights helped. I understand I am at a good level now to...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

This lights really needed to be cleaned out, there was a pile of sand mixed with dead and green algae in both of the large pool lights. I vacuumed it out to waste so that it would get out of the pool. I was also able to push a hose into the bottom of the waterfall and it forced out some "stuff"...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

I do have 2 large lights in the pool and a small one in the attached spa, that definitely could be hiding some algae so I will take a look and clean them out. I also have a waterfall in the deep end which is a bit of an extension of the pool, with about 4-5 inches of water at the bottom where...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

It looks like I didn't pass the test. I didn't get to check it when the sun was coming up, but at 10 AM I had FC-19 and CC-0, and last night after adding bleach it was FC-26 with CC-.5 - I also gave it about 45 minutes to circulate after adding the bleach. Do you agree that I am not done? Need...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

Texas Splash - I thought if the chlorine is that high it is bad for people, bathing suits, etc. or is that just an old chlorine idea? I poured the bleach directly into the skimmer to try and kill any algae in the filter grids. I guess I will be off to Shop Rite - their bleach is on sale for...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

Actually my CYA was 50-55 so the Slam was 20-22. This was from above this morning: Mon Morning PH was 7.5, FC 2, CC .5 and I started the Slam with target FC of 20-22. By late afternoon I got the FC up to 20-22 and needed to add a bottle of bleach every hour or so to keep it there. I brushed...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

The sun is behind the trees and I just did another test - FC 10, CC .5 (was a little more pink than earlier). The filter is still running well (only went up 1 lb pressure) and doesn't need to be backwashed, so it didn't get too much dead algae out today. The water looks nice and clear - see...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

I posted the 12pm update at the same time as you were responding Texas Splash! OK, thanks. Also, we want to use the pool tomorrow for small pool party for my son, so if the FC is 10 in the morning (after a successful no FC loss night) will that be OK? If it does lose FC overnight will it be...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

We came back from our trip last Sunday and the pool did OK. I had our neighbor add a couple of Trichlor tabs in the middle of last week and the pool was pretty clear but still a little algae hiding in corners, on steps, etc. We wanted to use the pool last week so I didn't Slam, and needed to add...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

If I could keep going with it now would I have needed to keep adding more bleach to try and get to FC 28? It seems like I would have needed a lot more if the max I got to was 9.5. How much will using some Trichlor for the week increase my CYA? I also am not sure of the plan once the water is...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

I tested about 1/2 hour after adding 10 121oz bottles of bleach and got FC of 9.5, CC 1. Since it didn't get up to the goal of 28 I added 4 more bottles, which is all I had left. I didn't get to test again for about 1 1/2 hours, and now it is FC 7.5, CC .5. It is a pretty hot, 85 degree sunny...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

I added the borax and 10+ gallons of bleach last night, but couldn't test until this morning, and it only was at FC of 1.5. The water looks good, no more green tint, but I don't see how I can get to a FC of 28. I had 5 more bottles of bleach and added them this morning, and an hour later FC is...

Thanks for getting right back to me on this - I was just getting ready to go to the store! Just to confirm, can I put the bleach in right after the borax?

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

I finished refilling another 12,000 gallons a couple of hours ago and re-tested. The water looks much better now, can easily see the bottom of the deep end though there is a green tint of algae. I am not absolutely sure about the CYA test because the sun was going down so it was not as bright...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

I figured that. I suppose I should drain 25% or a little more, correct? My wife was upset that I drained as much as I did before but I guess I should have waited for the kit before re-filling! I also wanted to be sure with the CYA test, if I am doing it properly. I filled the tube until I...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

I'm happy to say that the TF-100 arrived a day early so I was able to test today! Also, I emptied I believe about 1/2 of my water on the weekend and refilled with fresh - and you guys are correct, my CYA is 100 or maybe more now so it must have been really high before the water change! I am also...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

OK, won't add algaecide. I broadcast the Dichlor it all over the pool, it dissolves before it gets to the bottom for the most part. I am pumping out some water now - it should get some of the algae out and the CYA assuming it is high. The test kit is on the way but USPS says 2 Day so I should...

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

Thanks again for your advice! I will pickup some bleach today to add, but was also thinking that it may help to put in some of the algaecide though I don't know which is better to kill the algae. I am also in a bit of a rush and want to get it cleared up before I go on vacation this coming Thurs.

The test results from Leslie's are below. They show the CYA is 30, but I didn't see how they test it. I know they use drops for some of the tests, and the Nitrates was a test strip.

After starting pool for summer can't get FC up, Cloudy, Algae, pool eats Dichlor

I am pretty confident that the CYA is very low, as it is easy to read on the test strips and I can compare it to the Leslie's test to check - my wife is out now and has their test in her car. I think in the morning I will vac more out to waste as more dead algae has settled to the bottom, pump...
