    Opening Lessons Learned from Closing

Good lessons learned! I’m impressed you still had FC. that’s always been a struggle for me. It’s always at 0 with algae when I open. Maybe I’ll check out the closing levels again, but I suspect a lot of my problem is related to my climate. I get a lot of rain and water overflow through the...

From Green to Blue in Three Days

I thought I'd share some pics of my pool opening this year. I opened late, and as you can see I had quite an algae bloom on my hands. But with bleach, filtering, and elbow grease, got it cleared up no problem in 3 days. The big transformation happened over night. So grateful for TFP for teaching...

    Loud Pump - Any ideas?

To update you all, I ended up getting a new pump motor. It's been awhile and I expected it to start giving me trouble soon anyway, so I decided to go ahead and replace it.

    Loud Pump - Any ideas?

Not running dry, no. It's got plenty of water. Just loud. Sounds like a bad bearing makes the most sense. I'll have to try and work on it this weekend.

    Loud Pump - Any ideas?

I've had a lovely trouble free pool all summer until my pump started running really loudly today. It sounds roughly the same, just MUCH louder. I only have a couple years experience with a pool, so I wanted to ask your advice. Please, take a look at this video. Anyone experience something like...

    Laterals on top of sand?

To update everybody, I replaced the sand in the filter and opened the pool. All is running great! Thanks for your help.

    Laterals on top of sand?

Thanks, all! I'll update to let you know how it goes.

    Laterals on top of sand?

Thanks! Looks like I'm going to need to remove the sand either way, just to get those laterals underneath the sand. I was thinking the same thing, borjis. It seems like it would take a bunch of force to do that. I did have trouble getting the top off the filter, and I do recall hearing the...

    Laterals on top of sand?

Yeah, I think that's exactly what happened. I do have 100 pounds of filter sand that was left here by the former owner, so maybe this is a good time to just replace the sand. Anyone know how to get the laterals out? I suppose I need to pull them into the up position, but I want to do it right so...

    Laterals on top of sand?

It just occurred to me that maybe I accidentally pulled the laterals up through the sand when I was taking off the top. It wouldn't be the first mistake I've made. Let me know if you think that's what might have happened.

    Laterals on top of sand?

(See links and pictures below for reference). I opened up my sand filter to do a deep clean for the first time (just moved into this house 1.5 years ago). When I opened it, I was surprised to see 1) that the filter was only half full of sand, and 2) that the laterals were sitting on top of the...

Deep Cleaning Sand Filter - Can't separate the intake pipe.

Gotcha. I guess I made it a little more complicated than it really was. I had based my thinking on this bit from the Deep Cleaning guide, but I must have misunderstood -

Deep Cleaning Sand Filter - Can't separate the intake pipe.

That's the only union on the intake side, yes. It's not ideal, because I'd rather have something between the pump and the filter. However, I didn't think it'd be a big deal, because if any dirty water gets into the pump, it will drain out, because I've not yet opened it for the spring. But maybe...

Deep Cleaning Sand Filter - Can't separate the intake pipe.

EDIT: I'm sorry, but this post is no longer relevant, and I can't seem to delete it myself. I used some WD-40 (duh!) to get that stubborn coupling to turn. We're all set now. --------------------------------- Before I open my pool this spring, I'd like to do a deep clean. I moved into this...

    Granular Shock Will Not Dissolve

Strange that it won't dissolve, but yeah vacuum it up as soon as possible. I find it's a lot easier to dissolve granular shock in a bucket of warm water first then pour that into the pool.

How much did you spend on pool maintenance this summer?

I was inspired by another thread to post this. I think it would be good to share what we spent on pool maintenance this year to show folks how cheap the TFPC method is. Here's a breakdown for me: Bleach, Borax, Baking Soda $85.79 First Test Kit (Taylor K-2006) $64.99 Reagent Refills...

SLAM Questions - Some Strange Readings?

Thank you both. It's good to hear others didn't have CC with algae. I was worried there may have been a filtration problem. This is my first summer with a pool so i wasn't sure. I think I was spoiled too because when I did a SLAM at the beginning of the summer the algae cleared up on one night...

SLAM Questions - Some Strange Readings?

About three days ago, I discovered my pool had turned minty green and there was some visible algae on my steps. I thought it was strange that I had algae, because the FC level never went below the minimum of 2 ppm for my CYA level of 30. I think the issue was that I left the pump off for two...

Is using trichlor in my situation a good idea?

Yes, I meant down, not up. My mistake. As for the TA, the borax didn't affect it too badly, but I was careful at the beginning of the summer to get it just where I wanted it, so it was annoying to mess it up. Basically, I had all my levels right where I wanted them, and they were all steady...

Is using trichlor in my situation a good idea?

My CYA dropped considerably this summer (frequent backwashing and a lot of rain), so I switched to trichlor tabs temporarily to raise CYA. It was a nightmare. My PH, which had been incredibly consistent all summer, went up so fast I was constantly having to add Borax, which also messed with my...

    No overnight loss of FC

Not necessarily. CC itself is not a contaminate in your pool. It's a byproduct of your FC working on sanitizing your pool. It just means your FC is doing it's job, and there's still something in the water it's having to work extra hard on. You have enough of a contaminate in your pool for CC to...

Why didn't my shock dissolve in my pool (it seemed to have settled on the bottom)

If you use granular chlorine in the future, be sure you push it around with a broom until it dissolves or pre-dissolve it in a bucket of warm water and pour the solution slowly in front of a return jet. I find the second option is easier.

    I found this at Walmart...

It was 2.50 at my Wal-Mart a few weeks ago, but I haven't bought any in awhile. I hope the price hasn't jumped for me too. Otherwise, 64 oz bottles of bleach at 8.25% for $1.39 at Aldi will be the better deal in my town.
