Oh you're getting a pool? That means you must be rich....and stupid.....

FWIW, it cost us $2500 to have a gas line that ran through the middle of our yard re-routed so the pool could go in. Price included about 100 ft of trenching. That was about 15 yrs ago.

San Diego Electric Rates, YIKES! New pump time?

Howdy neighbor. Yep, rates are ridiculous here in America's Finest City. Go with a VS pump. We did and it made a big difference. Got a $200 rebate from SDG&E for a Pentair Intelliflo, which we installed ourselves. We're still in second-tier territory most of the time, but our bills have...

    Screeching Pool Pump

Squeaking, screeching and whining usually means the bearings are going bye-bye. If the motor feels unusually hot to the touch, it's almost certainly the bearings. Yes, just the motor can be replaced. If you're mechanically inclined you can even replace just the bearings.

Spa Side remote- not working, options?

To each their own, but why not just turn on the water feature from the house before the kids get in the spa? Then off when they get out? What else do you need to adjust when you're in the spa? If you absolutely have to have a remote, a basic 4-function controller is about $200, and they're...

    New VSP Pool Pump Advice

Trim back the vegetation around the pool! I'm not kidding. It makes a huge difference in how clean the pool stays and how much time you have to run your equipment. Seriously. You'll thank me.

    Yes, label says "silicone lubricant".

    Thinking about Plaster for new-build

What Brian said. Our builder told us how great pebble was, how much longer it would last than plaster, how smooth, durable, and beautiful it was, etc. etc. In all fairness, it was very nice at first. But within a few years the color started fading, light and dark streaks started appearing and...

    New VSP Pool Pump Advice

3" pipe isn't required for an Intelliflo. The manual recommends 2" but, as Jim said, they work fine with 1-1/2".

Spa Side remote- not working, options?

You know, our spa side controller stopped working last year and I deliberately haven't replaced it. Not a great loss. Do you really need to constantly adjust the temperature, turn the jets on and off, switch the lights, etc. from inside the spa? I figure it's just another thing for the kids...

Free form pool - worth the extra cost ?

Shape made no difference to our builder as far as cost. A free form simply made more sense for us due to certain peculiarities of our yard.

    Thinking about Plaster for new-build

We're 15 years into a pebble finish and honestly I would have gone with plaster if I'd have known then what it would look - and feel like - now.

Poolvergnuegen The Pool Cleaner 2 or 4 Wheel

^ Exactly. The 4 wheel model handles slopes better. Ours goes back and forth from deep to shallow end without breaking a sweat. It's a good cleaner, you'll like it.

    Shorter pump run times

IMO pump run times simply depend too much on factors specific to each individual pool to make any broad generalizations about what a "sufficient" run time is. Geography, climate, vegetation, wind, equipment, pool size, pool shape, and water depth are all factors, as well the pool ower's...

Mystery plumbing, what might these lines do?

The "extra" spa return allows you to divert some filtered & chlorinated water (via your chlorinator) to the spa when in "pool return" mode.

Hole too big for yard? Very worried

Can't blame you for being angry with the PB for arguing with you, but 18" of extra width is nothing to stress about in a yard the size of yours. Now if they made it 18" smaller than you requested, that might be a different story.

    Pool skimmer no suction

I think it's just a matter of getting the valves in the correct positions. Your equipment is very nicely laid out, btw. The labels are a little confusing though. Since water is now being pulled from and returned to the spa, I'd start there. One of the valves that leads to the suction side...

    End of my rope

Most of us have been in your shoes at one time or another... green swampy pool... random chemicals... endless brushing... no joy... Cheer up. Just follow the testing and SLAM procedures here and it'll soon be clear & blue. They work and you'll be a hero.

    Pool skimmer no suction

Ok, then I think the pump might be pulling from the spa and returning to the spa now. With the pump running can you see water moving in the spa?

    Pool skimmer no suction

The suction valve to the left of the label that says "Skimmer" is closed. Try partially opening it.

    New Build, Northern California

$1000 to add 2 jets is a lot. I'd probably pass. That said, jets themselves are pretty cheap and come in a dozen varieties. You might ask your PB what choices you have. Some spin, some are really bubbly, some have high pressure, some are adjustable. It's nice having different kinds. We have one...

Algae? What am I fighting? Stuff on bottom of pool!

If it's calcium it won't hurt to swim in it. Like Richard says, it should filter out. If it doesn't filter out, bite the bullet and vacuum it to waste.

Pool estimate help...Please look and make suggestions!

Why do you need two drains? I'd ask the builder to give you a dollar allowance for the 6" waterline tile. The stuff you like might cost 2x what he has in mind. I'd also make sure the build includes running an electrical outlet down by the pool deck. You're going to want someplace to plug...

    Hayward Poolvergnuegen The PoolCleaner

Just got ours a couple of weeks ago, works great. Agree with Jason, needs very little suction to move around - less than the Nav needed. I like that it doesn't spend a lot of time deciding whether to turn around or back up when it gets in a corner. And it goes into the shallow end happily and...

Why is Yellow Out or Yellow Trine Harmful to your pool?

As a fellow Californian, I can sympathize. Water is crazy expensive here in San Diego, and rock hard too. If it gives you any comfort, calcium scaling does gradually disappear once you get your TA and PH levels under control. I know because we had major calcium build up on the rock beneath...
