I have a hayward DE4820 filter, with the push-pull-type slide valve. If I was going to replace the valve, would it be better to replace it with the multiport valve or another slide valve of the same type?

Normally, I test my water every couple of days and add chemicals accordingly, to stay within recommended ranges. That got me thinking...should I also be re-testing a couple of hours after chemical additions, to verify that my chemicals are indeed at the desired levels? What is YOUR technique?
