My New Pool....First test Numbers...New to TFP

The good thing about this method is I don't have to drain about half my pool every winter. I take it to right below the skimmer only draining 4-5 inches at top, I'd say, and plug it up. I use a winter cover that lets the water, snow and ice melt and drain through. Viola, I didn't even have to...

Rounding the Corner... Install Completed 7/27/13

Good job Casey! I know what your saying. I actually wait for my hubby to go away on business before I start a project most of the time. There is usually to much arguing and he makes things wayyyyy more complicated than it has to be. My new ladder came in this morning, and it looks simple enough...

My New Pool....First test Numbers...New to TFP

Hiya Kris:wave: Looks like I'm only 20 min up I-79 from you. As a matter of facts I work in Clarksburg. Just letting you know that the advice you receive here will be golden. I found this forum after having my pool for 2 years on the baquacil system (Hated It). They helped me convert my pool...

    Just bought my first pool...

Stabilizer is sold at any pool store, or walmart in the pool section (usually cheaper at walmart), lowe's, home depot, etc. It says stabilizer right on the container, The ingredients are listed as 99% cyanuric acid (CYA).

    Just bought my first pool...

You won't regret buying the test kit. I love it! I'm in the process of helping a family member convert to the method they teach here. They have been puck and shock users for years and just couldn't understand how my water looks so clean and sparkly and there's, well lets just say not so much. Be...

    chlorine allergy

I'm not a professional, so I can't really answer about her asthma symptoms, although my daughter has asthma and it's never affected her. I can though tell you about non-chlorine pool sanitation from experience, and its not good. When we bought our pool, I decided to go the Baquacil route...

    Frustrated with Algae and FC

Check your ladder or stairs very carefully, I had no visible algae on the outside but when i pulled the out to look at them, the inside was full of algae. Nothing a little bleach/water couldn't fix.

Desperate timse call for desperate measures....

Hi again friends  You have probably seen my thread about my "dust" problem. Now that I have pulled the ladder out and got that all straightened out, I do have a question. I ordered a new ladder but it won't be here for a couple of more days. It was really time for a new one anyway. It is...

    Pool green...started slam....but?

You can really only tell your OCLT by taking the sample at night and testing first thing in the morning....if you were at 38 last night, then at 27 this morning, you lost 11 ppms, so it is still killing stuff. The good news is it seems to be holding much better, but you still need to keep...

    Do I have algae?

I know what your saying. Have had a lot of rain here this summer also. I like to keep my CYA around 50-ish because my pool is in full sun from daybreak until about 7:30 and I just added some last week and still am only reading around 40. I took my ladder out and slammed and viola! No more...

Still fighting brownish dust in bottom of pool

Here is a post of an issue I had earlier in the week. I am inclined to side with Dave that is it an algae bloom being kept at bay by the chlorine. I had spotty "dust spots" that would just poof up when I brushed them, my chlorine always read accurately and never showed any cc's from where I was...

    Pool green...started slam....but?

oh my, yeah, let that drift down a bit... I think your done for tonight...lol...start back up tomorrow IF it goes down below your shock level. Don't worry, I made that same mistake before, got carried away...my liner faded just a touch, not a whole lot.

    Pool green...started slam....but?

Ok , you numbers are off a bit, say you use 12 drops to clear your sample, then your FC is 6. Basically just take the number you got and divide it by 2. - - - Updated - - - Richard is a way faster typer and better explainer than I am...lol

    Pool green...started slam....but?

Like Richard said, it depends on your CYA level as to what your shock value is. What test kit are you using? Having the right kit will make the process a lot easier. If you are using the right shock number for your cya, then just add what the pool math tells you to. If you could test and add...

    Pool green...started slam....but?

Maintain it at your shock level until you: 1.lose less than 1ppm or less of FC over night 2. Have less than 1ppm of CC and 3. Water is clear All 3 must be met before you are done slamming. Hope this helps. If it is turning white, it is killing the algae, don't stop the coarse. It will happen...

    Invisible algae?

That sounds like a great idea!! Thanks! Just went and checked, my idea of moving the steps isn't going to work anyway. The person who I had build my deck didn't do it quite right (cheap labor, trying to help someone down on their luck), it isn't sqaure, more of he tried to get all fancy and...

I had spotty "dust spots" that would just poof up when I brushed them, my chlorine always read accurately and never showed any cc's from where I was pulling my test water from, The water always remained crystal clear and sparkly, but there was always "dirt in the divots and creases. scrubbed...

    Free chlorine problem

First let me recommend that you get yourself a good test kit and take control of the pool yourself. I LOVE, LOVE LOVE, did I say LOVE the TFTest kit sold here. The pool store numbers have a way of being notoriously wrong. If those are truly your numbers then the only thing you need to kill the...

    Invisible algae?

Well, I just placed on order for a new ladder, not even going to try to deal with it. It's 7 years old and had it's fair share of use. My dear hubby replaced some screws and didn't use the right kind, so they are all rusted and the ladder won't come apart anyway.

    Invisible algae?

Just found the source to my problem. I pulled the ladder out and it was algae free, but when I turned it over to drain it, OH MY GOSH, the stuff that came pouring out! I don't even know how to begin getting bleach in there to see if I can kill it, or if it would even be worth it. The ladder is...

    Do I have algae?

Yes ma'am, SLAM. I jut finished a slam due to my ladder. That's the only thing I can figure anyway. No visible algae but a CC reading that told me something was going on.

    Invisible algae?

Casey, I brush the pool at least once a week, but I must confess, been kind kind of neglectful of the ladder. Although there was no visible algae, that is the only thing I can think of. I passed the OCLT, but think I'm going to pull the ladder completely out and give it a good scrub down...

    Invisible algae?

Hi all! I have been following the Slam method since converting my pool from baquacil to chlorine This is my 4th summer using chlorine.. I have never had to slam except upon opening until tonight. The water has been crystal clear and I have never let my chlorine levels fall below the min. levels...

    Stainless poles in pool

I'm pretty sure that is one of the recommended test kits. The other being the TFTest kit. The TFTest kit might cost a little more, I can't remember but it is the better bargain for the amount of reagents you get.

    still no chlorine reading !

Use the handy dandy Pool Math to figure out how many gallons your pool holds. Plug in your numbers and what your goal number is. For example, if your chlorine reading is 1, put that in the fist box, then put 20 in the 2nd box. Then put what strength bleach you are using and hit calculate...

    still no chlorine reading !

With a cc of 1, you have something (algae, more than likely, just not visible yet), trying to take hold. You need to read up on how to slam your pool in Pool School. This will require testing and adding chlorine (Bleach) every hour or as often as you can, to bring it back to shock level until...

    Do I have algae?

What test kit do you use? Have you brushed the stairs? I wipe down my stairs with bleach every couple of weeks just to make sure there is no algae hiding there. Do you have a lot of trees, could be pollen if your OCLT is passing. Do you have a lot of road dust? Just throwing some things out...

    Shock once a week?

Nope. I never have had to shock (SLAM) after the initial opening each spring. I test every night and dose accordingly and my water stays clear all season.
