    More Fine Tuning

Check  I did not see the entire article, just a quote from a poster. The quote is correct, however, in that the affect of CYA does diminish rather significantly, although the relationship is more linear than exponential. Then it becomes a trade-off between FC loss (and bleach cost) v...

    HERE WE GO!!!!!

No, I was merely commenting on use of the Baq test strips. Best approach is to check frequently and adjust to 15 ppm throughout the day. As you get near the end point you will notice that the FC depletion slows down. This indicates to me that the depletion due to sunlight is greater than the...

    What FC Loss To Expect

I am in NJ and it has been hot and sunny most days. I average 3 ppm FC loss with normal bather load. That has been pretty consistent over a CYA range of 30 -50 ppm. Every pool is different and you just have to get comfortable with your own results. Luckily bleach is cheap!

Trying to get rid out my cloudy/murky water

If your numbers are accurate, it seems as if you have obliterated the algae that caused your problem (0 FC loss overnight and you also were thorough in sweeping, etc. ) Now it remains to remove the residual materials using your filter. I use DE, so for me that's pretty much a no-brainer. The...

    More Fine Tuning

Everything seems to be going well in my first BBB summer, but just wanted to get a little fine tuning advice (or at least explore differing opinions, as I know that after a while pool control becomes quite a personal process). Saturday am numbers are: FC 4.5 CC 0 TC 4.5 pH 7.6 TA 100 CH 70 CYA...

    HERE WE GO!!!!!

Don't know what the Baq test strips indicate in the presence of FC. I would ignore them. Just get your FC to 15 in the evening, test for FC in the am and post the results. I started out with very low Baq level, too, and got no color change in the pool. That does not mean that there is no...

CH at 950 and the white flakes

RO will do it but will also remove all of your other dissolved species (TA, CYA, salt). Not that draining wouldn't do the same thing, but just so you know. Sounds like you could use a softener on your water supply. Otherwise, with 200 ppm CH in your fill water, over time your pool will build...

    HERE WE GO!!!!!

Don't know how many years you have been on Baquacil (I didn't have any trouble for the first seven years and then everything went to pot.) In my opinion it's never to early to convert and you can be sure of finding both encouragement and assistence on TFP. I converted this spring and am...

    Unable to get Chlorine Readings

Also, verify that the turbo-shock you used was actually chlorine-based (probably calcium hypochlorite) rather than sodium monopersulfate. Sounds unlikely that you were given the wrong thing but I have met some really dopey pool store guys (with all due respect). Then, just stick with the...

Help me Obi Wan: Pool Store v. TFP

As previous posts on TFP have indicated, the 1-3 ppm FC is more than adequate to control the water-borne bacteria likely to inhabit a home pool. Drinking water purification is achieved at below these levels. External exposure to the levels recommended here are pretty harmless, though. The...

Help me Obi Wan: Pool Store v. TFP

But seriously folks, other than TFP, the prevailing wisdom being advanced by pool "experts" is geared toward selling products, not maintaining trouble-free pools. After all, "trouble" is what takes money to cure. Even the honest guys have been trained in the false doctrine by chemical reps and...

    what size pump

If your signature specs are accurate, your old pump moved 44 gpm. I assume this was at a nominal "clean" filter operating pressure of somewhere between 10-15 psi gauge reading (note: 1 psi = .43 feet of head). This means that you would pump about 2640 gph, turning your pool over once in about...

    Just another THANK YOU !!

Got mine at Stop N Shop, bottom shelf below the other laundry additives. They don't stock much, but it's there most days.

    Just another THANK YOU !!

"Joisey" is another state. We are both from Ocean County; you know, "Down the Shore." Keep enjoying your pool and keep contributing to the site so that people like us can enjoy our pools, too.

    Just another THANK YOU !!

Your specs look close to mine (and we are neighbors at that). I just converted and couldn't be happier. There is a local pool store (in Jackson and southern part of the county) who has tried to sell me on any number of high-priced items. I now will drive an extra 5 miles to pick up parts or...

    Fine Tuning With BBB

A nephlometer measures opacity or cloudiness of solutions. Used in the pharmaceutical industry (and others, I suppose) to measure for gross impurities.

    Fine Tuning With BBB

Thanks to all. Yes, the water is crystal clear (according to my wife, who can spot cloudiness quicker than a nephlometer!). I expect it to stay that way and to finally get some real enjoyment out of the pool.

    Fine Tuning With BBB

Recent convert to BBB and looking good so far. Reading as follows: FC 3 CC 0 CYA 30 CH 80 TA 80 pH 7.5 I check pH and FC in the evening, add bleach as required. I shut the filter down before I go to bed and turn it back on in the am. Saturday morning complete chemistry with the TF100...

you are going to love this...

What state do you guys live in where they will take returns on chemicals? I have tried in NJ after switching to BBB and was told that by law they could not take back even unopened chemicals. I have not checked the law books but was wondering if this were just another pool store fraud.

Intro- New pool - using Baquacil

Waskydiver presents a reasoned opinion. He might be telling my story. I joined this forum after using Baquacil for about seven years, the first four of which were trouble-free, the last three spent fighting algae and gummed up DE filter. Still, I was determined to hang with Baq because I...

    Aeration

    Thanks. That is helpful.
  23. Jersey Devil

    Aeration

I know aeration can reduce TA at low pH (7 - 7.2). I reduced mine from 100-90 ppm merely by directing the flow outlets upward. Pool now in balance: FC = 4 CC = 0 pH = 7.4 CYA = 20 TA = 90 CH = 125 (at last check) I like the effect of directing the jets upward. It keeps the surface moving...

    Algae Prevention

Slip of the key. CYA is 20 using TF100. I can add CYA to get it up to 30-40. I will re-test tonight and get the old sock out (knee-high nylon works great). I will be using pucks to keep the FC up while away (one week). What do you recommend?
  25. Jersey Devil

    Algae Prevention

Considering 24 ppm CYA and current FC target at 4, how many pucks required for 20,000 gal.? I am totally unfamilar with slow-dissolving tabs. I expect I will also add a start-up dose of polyquat 60, as there will be nobody around to check on it.

    Another Converter.

Be patient and keep blasting the bleach. I just finished my conversion. Even starting with a zero Baqucil reading it still took me three nights to retain a 15 ppm FC level. I used about 8 gallons of 12.5% bleach (bought it in bulk from my hardware guy - cheaper than Wal-Mart 5.25%...

    Algae Prevention

New to BBB after Baquacil conversion. I understand that proper balance and maintaining the right FC will generally prevent algae. However, stuff happens, right? I have read about borates and also poly-quat 60 as acceptable algaestats (note: I believe only chlorine to be an effective...

Baquacil OUT/ BBB IN - need advice

Sorry. I have been adjusting to 15 ppm per the accepted process. Level was 15 when I went to bed last night, so I am still burning something. Whether it is Baquacil or the remnants of organic materials that loaded up my pool due to a failed safety cover (it just got old and deteriorated) is...

Baquacil OUT/ BBB IN - need advice

Overnight reading FC = 6 ppm. Pool is clear and DE filter flow pretty good. Adding bleach to 15 ppm. I really need to clean the filter today (late nights at work starting tomorrow!). Any major downside of doing this before achieving the stabile overnight reading? (In other words, do you...
