Ever Blow Out Suspected Clogs Through the Valve Housing?

I'm determined to solve my main drain issues, and I'm due for valve maintenance anyway. So, my plan is to pull the guts from my three diverter valves, and while I have them open, build myself a little 2 in PVC elbow adaptor for my air compressor and try (once again) blowing the lines clear of...

Dreaded dirty floor bottom after vacuumed

What duraleigh said. SLAM. Vacuum (or even better... robot). Test and maintain. I'm a recent (last season) convert and I have seen the light! I have also seen sparkling clean water and saved a bunch of $$. Rock on, TFPeople!

    Using up Old Shock

Great ideas. I'm finishing up my opening SLAM with good, mid-level CYA for my pool around 40. I have a few old shocks around, too, and will use them when I need a little FC *and* CYA boost. TFPeople are the best!

Do you dip for each test OR fill a jar and do tests with a single container of pool w

I got a little squeeze sample bottle with a tiny spout on it perfect for all my tests. To each their own, but no need to draw new samples for each test. I like the consistency of testing the same sample for whatever tests I'm running. :)

    New Intelliflo!!

Also just ordered a set of replacement grids for my FNS Plus 48 from Pool Supply World. $89 with free shipping vs $180 for the same items from Inyo. Anyone have any luck, good or bad, with Pleatco replacement grids? I'm getting some DE blowing into the pool and when I degreased the grids this...

    New Intelliflo!!

Got my new Intelliflo installed this weekend and am loving it. The old brass housing Anthony was a trooper, but a relic. Will have to look into whether that old work house has any value or is ready for the scrap heap. Had a new fence put in and the yard has really opened up. Delaying relocation...

    SLAM Day!!

I think I'm getting near the end. I should know for sure by the morning, but here are the results over 2-1/2 days. I did not bother with the CC test each time, since the FC was dropping. Holding steady most of today. I'm assuming the OCD test is literally overnight, even though I haven't added...

    Backwash hose alternatives

My wife is a volunteer EMT and I just got two 50 ft. lengths of 1.5" fire hose for draining/backwashing. Idea is to stop flooding my neighbors out and running it to the storm drain out front. I'll need another 100 ft or so, but word is that that more hose is coming up for decommissioning soon...

    SLAM Day!!

Oh, yeah, baby. Dropped from 20 to 13 in 2.5 hours. Added another 267 oz to get back to 20. Brushed sides and bottom. Check again in a couple hours and see how she's doing. Love the meme! cheers

    SLAM Day!!

Here we go. Loaded in 18 jugs of bleach. Water temp of 68. Adjusted pH to ~7.35. Got as many leaves and debris out as possible. CYA holding steady at 50. FC was basically zero. Added ~756 oz bleach for target FC of 20. Will test FC again in a couple of hours and see how rapidly it's dropping...

    Dialing it in...

Yep. Understood. And no, no pool store stuff since getting my test kit and doing the partial drain and refill. It was all pucks before then and CYA was way high. I needed that down to SLAMmable levels. Off to stock up on bleach and possibly start SLAM tomorrow. I get the gist but yeah, the algae...

Preparing to SLAM this weekend. Pleased with the way the numbers are settling in, with the exception of course of FC. Thus the SLAM. Looking forward to opening the 2018 season early and with total confidence! Yesterday's test results: Water temp - 65 deg F FC - 0.5 CC - 1 pH - 7.5 TA -...

Today's installment. One or two minor surprises, but still playing with all the pieces. I also need to read through Pool School or the Deep End to see if I can get a better understanding of how each level may or may not affect the others. I feel pretty solid on CYA and FC. CH and TA and such...

    Dialing it in...

Preparing for SLAM (been reading a lot) is exactly why I've been trying to get a handle on CYA, then TA. Agreed on letting things settle for a few days. I'm also concerned about the FC levels, but my bad experience to date has me partly convinced that CYA, then TA and possibly CH are keeping me...

    Dialing it in...

So, here are today's results. Still getting a feel for how quickly or slowly these things move, especially the acid/aeration process. Water temp - 65 deg F FC - 1 CC - 1 pH - 7.2 TA - 110 CYA - 50 CH - 200 CSI is showing -0.6 Added 242 oz bleach toward target FC of 8. Continuing aeration...

Missed the target FC for CYA of 60 is 8, so ran that through and added another jug of bleach to get closer to FC of 8. Still aerating to drive TA down around 90-ish. Will then see if pH stabilizes and focus on FC and CSI. Feel free to chime in if you see something odd in my approach. But I'm...

    Dialing it in...

Very helpful. I've been adding Cl based on what Pool Math says for a target of 4 for FC. Water temp is now at 72, but I'll probably back that off to 65 or so later today. You're right about the excessive product. Pucks and strips for 3 seasons had me all out of whack. I'm working on getting...

Update: TA is coming down slowly and FC beginning to stabilize some. Today's readings: FC 1.5 CC 1 pH 7.3 TA 110 CYA 60 CH 200 Added 28 oz Acid and 121 oz Bleach. Aerating through the spa for much of the afternoon. Keeping an eye on CSI, which is hovering on the low end at -0.53. If I'm not...

Good point. Dropping pH and aerating, though I only have the spa to do that. Beat the CYA. TA is next, unless there's another priority. Getting a feel for the method and the pool before SLAM and close. Pretty cool, though, for a rookie! That reminds me... gotta go fire up the bubbles. Forgot to...

Just an update on my newbie TFP method progress. After a partial drain and refill, receipt of my TF-100 test kit, cheap bleach, muriatic acid and supplies, I couldn't be happier. Despite being in Northern Virginia (first snow tonight), I keep the pool open and modestly heated late. Getting ready...

Muriatic Acid Vs "Green" Muriatic Acid

Yep. The MSDS for the straight Jasco MA says 31-35%. I guess once you get up around 20 Baume, you're on your own. PPE, baby.

Thinking about closing my own pool but have some concerns

Agreed. It seems to be about getting the right combo of pressure and volume, with minimal loss. I'll wager using a tankless compressor would not produce the volume needed, where the shop vac motor would not produce the pressure needed. The pancake has enough of both. I have a 20-gallon tank...
