How do I get sap out of my pool?

I've been struggling with what I think is pine tree sap in our pool for a while now. The filter can't seem to get it out so I've gone through 2 bottles of floc, waiting 24 hours after each one and vacumming to waste. Each one helped, but once the gunk on the bottom is stirred up with the...

    Mysteriously disappearing chlorine

Thank you, that all makes perfect sense. And yes, the water is clear. I knew there was a reason why I stopped going to the pool store! I'll keep monitoring the chlorine levels as I have and just add bleach as necessary. As always, thank you everyone for your help!!

    Mysteriously disappearing chlorine

We have no pets, just 2 kids and small gatherings of people. We do have a lot of chipmunks and frogs in the yard and some tend to get in the pool and drown. I've not found anything dead in the pool in the last couple of weeks though. Haven't thought about something getting stuck in the drain...

    Mysteriously disappearing chlorine

I stopped at the pool store today and the guy suggested that we might have an ammonia problem. Never really thought about it and i didn't have a water sample with me at the time to test it. what do i do with an ammonia problem? is there a way to test for it at home?

    Mysteriously disappearing chlorine

It's been pretty warm and sunny the last couple of weeks. Once the FC gets to around 1, I add enough Clorox to bring it up to around 5. If the tablets are not dissolving fast enough to replenish the chlorine, what is the best option? Should I add a second floater?

    Mysteriously disappearing chlorine

I use the TF100 test kit and test chlorine and pH daily, everything else weekly. CYA has remained around 40 for weeks now. I use Clorox whenever I need to shock the pool, otherwise I use trichlor tablets I got at Costco. I know not all pool chemicals are created the same, but I was hoping...

    Mysteriously disappearing chlorine

Over the last two weeks we started to lose chlorine in the pool. We have a floating chlorinator that had been keeping the chlorine level around 5, and I've been testing daily and weekly. Two weeks ago our pool turned milky overnight and the chlorine dropped to 0. I was able to clear up the...

Pool turned milky and opaque overnight

Thank you for your very quick reply. I'm going to shock to pool now, but should I also get an algaecide, or just wait and see what the shock does?

Pool turned milky and opaque overnight

Since we cleaned up our swamp about a month ago, we've had perfectly balanced, crystal clear water. I did a full test 3 days ago and all the numbers were in range. Daily pH and chlorine tests on Wednesday showed 7.5 and 6ppm. We woke up this morning to a completely opaque, milky white pool...

Where can I rent a Hammerhead or Leaf Eater?

Awesome, thank you! We ended up cleaning up our pool the old fashioned way, but for $50 this is definitely worth having around.

My pool is a swamp help!

Definitely get a good test kit. We got the TF-100 based on Pool School recommendation and it's awesome. Keep shocking and run your filter 24x7. It may not seem like your pool will ever clear up, but it will. Keep an eye on the filter too and backwash it often. We just finally got our swamp...

    Thank you TFP!

I just wanted to send a big 'Thank You' to this board. A little over 2 weeks ago, in a new house as new pool owners, we opened our pool to a flooded muddy mess. We didn't know the first thing about pool maintenance, let alone something as challenging as cleaning up a swamp. We spent the first...

Hayward H250 gas heater - pilot question

Hmmmm ... I looked at the manual (thank you for the link!) and my pilot is not there. If I follow the metal tube from the control, it goes behind the panel with the round holes on it. (sorry for the terrible description) There is no way for me to see the pilot without taking the heater apart.

Hayward H250 gas heater - pilot question

Ok, this is going to be a stupid question, but where is the pilot? We're trying to start it for the first time (new house so never used the heater before). Following instructions but not seeing a pilot light anywhere. I assume I would notice it once it was lit, but I can't even find it.

Odd pump suction issue and question on numbers

Oh ok, I will hold off on the acid. Should I even bother putting stabilizer in, considering I will be vacuuming and refilling several times over the next few days? I would hate to dump a bunch more chemicals in if I'm just going loose it all in the process. What's the best way to find where...

Odd pump suction issue and question on numbers

Thank you both. I backwashed and rinsed the filter and tested the water again. Heading out for stabilizer and acid today. Will post numbers later.

Odd pump suction issue and question on numbers

We've been trying to clean up a badly flooded pool for the last two weeks. This morning, after another vacuuming session we restarted the pump. A few hours later I stopped the pump to check for debris in the baskets, and as the pump stopped, a bunch of dirty water shot up from the skimmer...

Where can I rent a Hammerhead or Leaf Eater?

Thank you! So far no luck finding a rental so I'll keep vacuuming the old fashioned way.

New pool owner - trying to clean up flooded pool

Thank you. We'll leave the pump for now. Electrcian is out today to hardwire the pump (cord was chewed up and shorted) and upgrade our the circuit to 220. Then, we can get back to the swamp in hopes that we get to use the pool by mid June sometime.

Where can I rent a Hammerhead or Leaf Eater?

I'm in a new house with a new pool that flooded and the bottom is covered in leaves. We've been vacuuming with the a regular skimmer attached vacuum but there is just too much gunk and the basket fills up in a minute or two. I've been reading various forums and it sounds like a Hammerhead or a...

New pool owner - trying to clean up flooded pool

Thank you, that's good news on both accounts. I've done a little research and I think there is a pretty good chance we have an above-ground pump for our in-ground pool. I'll verify once I'm home. Can I continue using that pump if it is the wrong type? It looks like the difference is mostly...

New pool owner - trying to clean up flooded pool

So what I thought may have been a diverter is actually just the plate for vacuuming. We have valves controlling the flow from the drain and skimmer. To my amazement, when I got home last night I could actually see the bottom of the pool on the shallow end. So we vacuumed, brushed and...

New pool owner - trying to clean up flooded pool

I have two holes in the skimmer and I do have (what I think is) a diverter, but I was told to use that for vacuuming only. Water is definitely going through the skimmer. What else should I check to see if the drain has proper suction? Should I have the diverter on even when I'm not...

New pool owner - trying to clean up flooded pool

Thank you for your quick post! We have an 16x32 in-ground pool. 1HP Hayward pump, 24" Pentair Triton sand filter, 1 skimmer. Yes we are running the pump non-stop. I have read through pool school and found a lot of great information. I was going to ask whether I should get my own test kit...

New pool owner - trying to clean up flooded pool

Hi everyone, We recently moved to a new home with a pool and the day before opening it flooded due to really bad storms. A lot of mud and debris got in the pool and it was murky brown when we opened it. Since then, we've been taking water samples to a nearby pool store to try to get the pool...
