    Flow level changes overnight?

Ive noticed this since I made the higher flow mod to my LQ: one day I can set the flow at 3 on the flow meter. Everything seems to work fine, no air in the system, etc. Enough flow that I can peg the meter if I want. Let it run for the rest of the on cycle and its fine. The next day Ill...

    Sand filter not filtering.

I believe "clarifier" will clump the small stuff up and make it rise to the surface where the automatic or manual skimmers can get it. Be very careful though, I would only use it as per instructed (even use a little less than what it tells you to) and make sure you are there to watch the...

    Is this pump ok?

I have a 22K gallon inground pool and Im running a .5HP (yes, half a horsepower) NorthStar pump. There is a lot to look at when choosing a pump. How much plumbing (not as important in an AG pool), the efficiency of the pump, the efficiency of the motor (up-rated vs full-rated, service factor)...

    Switch to DE?

Yeah, I think it was just a knee-jerk reaction. Im known as "the pool God" in my family, but my reputation was slipping! Just took way too long to clear the pool up this year, no idea why (last year I had it open and cleared up within 24 hours!!) The DE definitely worked....pressure rise...

    Switch to DE?

After a week long battle with suspended stuff not getting filtered out, I had an "ah ha!" moment and added a bit of DE to my sand filter. Sure enough, overnight filtering and the water is almost crystal clear. Which leads me to ask.....should I switch to DE? Ive never had a pool with a DE...

    Rattling in the sand filter

I have 2 "rattles" like this. 1 is the check valve from my Rainbow feeder, probably not the issue you have 1 is the multiport on the filter (same filter as you). I believe its because of air trapped in the system when the pump takes a bit to prime, as the noise only shows up when my pump...

    Sharkbite Plumbing Fittings

I used a bunch of them to plumb a Pex line out to my backyard for easier watering of our garden. They have held up pretty well. Ive even had them pop off because of freezing (didnt blow the lines out soon enough...OOPS!!) but I snapped them back together and they just keep working. Yes, there...

Water has a green "tint" to it....

Oops forgot to mention that. Yes, Ive vacuumed twice, each time directly to waste (I know, waste of water but I find its just easier to make sure everything gets taken out of the pool instead of possibly bypassing the filter and getting suspended in the water). There is a little junk on the...

Water has a green "tint" to it....

Opened our 22K IG vinyl pool last Wed. I waited too long (recent heat up in CT + mesh safety cover = green!) Pump has been running 24/7 ever since, along with the LQ and periodic additions of 12.5% directly into the pool. Here is where we stand: FC - 6.5 CC - 0.5 (this is weird, it...

Couple of questions on the Liquidator...

I actually got the required tubing from Lowes. It might not be tygon tubing, but its black (I hated looking at cloudy tubing), the correct diameter for the mod, and CHEAP. Something like 20 cents/ft. I wanted 20' (I have my LQ in a nearby storage shed), the roll probably had 35' left, Lowes...

LQ 3/8 line conversion (How to increase flow)

I seem to be getting a little air from somewhere...I can see bubbles entering the flow meter. I dont *think* I see them exiting the LQ itself, so Im guessing air is getting in where the hose connects to the inlet and outlet of the flow control valve. I will add some clamps this weekend...

LQ 3/8 line conversion (How to increase flow)

yeah it looked like it was draining out the outlet side. When the pump was off the flow meter still showed some flow. I pulled the hose off the inlet of the flow meter and sure enough there was water draining out. I turned the flow valve off just in case....this morning I opened the flow...

LQ 3/8 line conversion (How to increase flow)

Just fired up the pool and LQ last night. The upgrade makes a HUGE difference. Im getting 3 on the flow meter with the flow valve barely open! I did notice, however, that my LQ "drains down" after the pump is shut off. it may have always been this way and I just didnt pay attention, or it...

    Which new pump?

Not trying to hijack the thread, but looking for pump alternatives (in case mine goes kaput this season)........I notice the WhisperFlo has a 115V 2 speed model. How do they do that? Or is the description Im reading incorrect? I always thought 220V was standard and you got high speed by using...

    Coupler on return line?

I was wondering how everyone copes with inground PVC plumbing in regards to being able to get easy access to the inside of the filter. My return line is basically glued in place so if I ever wanted to remove the multiport valve Id have to do plumbing work. I picked up a 1.5" screw together...

    Liquidator replacement parts?

Started the 3/8" mod to my LQ tonight and accidentally nicked the float inlet when adding the flow holes to it. Any idea what places still stock parts for it? I found a few online but wonder if their websites are really up to date or not. I was able to smooth out the nick in the float inlet...

LQ 3/8 line conversion (How to increase flow)

Excellent, thanks for the info! I brought the LQ inside this year, so I figure before its opening time Ill upgrade the parts I can right now. -Chris

LQ 3/8 line conversion (How to increase flow)

Question about the upgrade: I was wondering if you cut off the smaller "nozzle" portion of the inlet and outlet float screw mounts. The threads fit the 1/4" to 3/8" adapter just fine, but I was wondering if the small outlet size is restricting and if it should be cut off back to the threads...

Do you still have problems with your Liquidator?

The tubing on mine has "whitened over", but it doesnt seem to be causing any flow issues currently. I have all the parts ready to go for the upgrade to 3/8" tubing, but like they say "if it aint broke dont fix it". I might wait until next season to upgrade it.

    Lost Liquidator's flowmeter black ball

I was able to find the ball (thanks to the 2" of rain we got last night, it squished down a lot of grass around my equipment). I reinstalled it without measuring, but I would be more than willing to get the diameter with a caliper or micrometer. As for density, not sure. I could weigh it...

    Lost Liquidator's flowmeter black ball

Yes, I cant read the flow, but I never found a really good correlation between flow reading and ppm of CL reading anyway (since it differs so much with splashout, weather, bather load, etc). Last I checked I had the valve about half open and am keeping very good levels of FC in my pool. Yes...

    Lost Liquidator's flowmeter black ball

Did they send you a whole new flow meter? I too lost the black ball...Im sure I can function without it, but it sure would be nice to know a ballpark of the flow Im getting. -Chris

    Liquid chlorine date codes....

After reading much talk about how 12.5% degrades faster than 6%, etc, I was wondering if anyone has a way to determine the date code on a 5 gallon carboy. My local pool store sells them under the "Blue Shield" name, and there is at least one or two numeric codes on them somewhere. Im sure they...

How To Know Where Your Underground Pipes Are Located?

You can verify with the pressure test but it seems like youve done your homework to find out where your leak is. I went thru the same issue when my shallow end return was leaking. Overnight there was no loss because the filter was off. Fire up the filter during the day and in a matter of a...

How To Know Where Your Underground Pipes Are Located?

Can always do what I did: run a brand new line. I had a return side leak in our shallow end return plumbing. It was just a LOT easier to run a new line than try to find and repair the old. The only concrete work that was necessary was a 1.5' square where the return is located, about 1' back...

    Auto-fill for Liquidator?

Hmm, figured it couldnt be any worse than glow fuel ? There is also a straight gas version, would bleach eat that too? Looks like Im just gonna have to suck it up and pour :) Ill put a little shelf over the LQ or something to rest the jug on, at least it will help a little.

    Auto-fill for Liquidator?

Easy (and fairly cheap) fix: electric fuel pump for a gas powered RC vehicle. It runs on 12V thats the only drawback (I suppose you could hack in a round AC jack, then get a wallwart to go from 120V to 12V and plug into the pump). If you didnt want to hack in a new jack, you could always...

    Auto-fill for Liquidator?

Yep, thats my backup plan :) As much as I like using the 5 gallons, its such a pain to try to get them to pour slowly. And once they do pour slowly, you really need them to POUR SLOWLY. Takes too long! Thinking of another idea, Im wondering if all you need is a cap from a carboy with 2 hoses...

    Auto-fill for Liquidator?

I was wondering if this might work: Seeing as how the 5 gallon carboys are a pain to lift and pour nicely, I was wondering if you could plumb something inline with the pressure feed to the Liqiudator, so that it "pulls" the liquid chlorine out of the carboy and brings it into the Liquidator...
