Remove the timer and let the freeze guard run the pump 24/7 at a low speed for freeze protection. Or, keep the timer and set the pump to low so it works with the freeze guard when needed.

I vote for cartridge filters coz they are easier to clean.

I’ve heard the cheaper mesh covers work just as well. As long as they’re sturdy and fit right, they should do the job.
