Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

Hi Seuss, I will try to remember to send an email as well tomorrow. I haven't heard anything from Tallman. I closed pool later this year while water temp was a good bit under 65. This year I didn't use a closing kit and opted to just shock it a couple days before closing. I was getting the...

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

Hi Drseuss, Almost exact same thing for me. Sent pics and info. I've since closed the pool. When draining below the skimmer I was able to really see and get to the chalky residue once it dried on walls and steps. I could scratch it with my finger nail and get a light blue colored residue under...

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

I just called Tallman. The girl Brittany I had dealt with in July is no longer there and I asked for Rachal and left my contact info. The guy that answered tried to direct me to Jack's Magic again. I hope this is not the beginning of a run-around after they told us this was a known gelcoat issue...

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

Texas, i was told by the manufacturer that this is an issue not just with Tallman pools but Viking and others with the gelcoat producer. Like Seuss mentioned I was told the same. Have you reached out to them to see what they say recently?

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

Hi Drseuss, After reading your post I also called Tallman. It is a big relief its not scale or something I was doing to the pool but I guess this issue could drag out. Just a piece of mind it wasn't my pool care that caused it. I think if we stay on this together we might get it resolved. Thank...

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

I called Jack's magic and tried the stain id test just now and nothing. Not even a little bit. Guy at Jack's said if this doesn't move it it's something else like anomaly in gelcoat. I'm thinking oxidation now. Drseuss, cool pools did mine too. I'm just above Fayetteville. They were less than...

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

Drseuss, I'm in NC and had pool installed from a company out of Cary area. Not much if any help from installer or manufacturer. My calcium was always very low around 30-40 range years ago when issues started. Last year I brought that up and maintained it. In some areas I can still see the dark...

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

Texas, I have thought calcium silicate too. Back 2016 I thought that but was miffed how quick it got there. Since then I would think I wouldn't get anymore scale with the way I've kept pH on low side. I think what I see in the seats and ledge curves is silicate. What grit paper are you using...

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

Hi drseuss, I've thought calcium scale of both kinds until recently I started thinking oxidation. Tallman at first pointed me to swg causing it and had me pour in Jack's magic. This past visit they balked at oxidation and said it was something on the surface due to chemistry. I even went as far...

Fiberglass pool looks faded in places ??

Any updates? Still battling here too. Manufacturer tossed blame on chemistry and dismissed any chance of oxidation but he really didn't know what to say about correction. He mentioned winterizing kits a few times and maybe something was in those that is causing the scale/chalk residue.

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

Honestly it's making me bipolar. Depending on the day and how the sun hits it one moment I think it's getting better and the next time I look I'm doubtful and think it's getting worse.

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

Manufacturer sent guy out today and as I expected they put onus on me. He stated it's not oxidation but a buildup of some sort. So we're going to watch a spot I've sanded on a year ago and at seasons end see if things are better or worse. So I still don't know 100% whether its scale or...

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

I will run my numbers again tomorrow. Supposed to be good and hot in Carolinas this weekend. Should get some use. My CSI has been pegged at -0.6 since opening. I suspect it will move off that a bit as temperature rises. As I understand it at present readings I shouldn't see any new scale...

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

Tallman pool manufacturer is sending someone out to take a look. Ill post what I find out. Is there such a thing as salt scale? I swear it seems when I use swg the scaling starts up.

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

Thanks Texas and please do let me know and I will keep updates posted as well. At this point I just want to know the facts or truth. I want to Know for sure what is and what caused it. If there is a fix. If it's typical to fiberglass pools I want to know. If it's a gelcoat manufacturing issue...

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

Hi James, Today I took a piece of 600 grit sandpaper and swiped across the wall and got some very light blue residue. I scrapped it off and dropped muratic acid on it and no bubbling at all. Maybe I have some little scale here and there but starting to looks like issue is oxidation after all. I...

Fiberglass pool looks faded in places ??

How did you fair on this issue? I'm up against same problem. Bounced back and forth whether it's calcium scale vs oxidation. Today I took a piece of 600 grit sandpaper and swiped across the wall and got a very light blue residue. I scrapped it off and dropped acid on it and no bubbling. Maybe I...

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

Thanks for the quick responses everyone. James, no residue when I rub across it. I can't really scratch any up but I have poured muratic acid on my stone tile border at waterline and it bubbles there. Last year I sanded some areas in testing and those areas you can still see the darker blue...

Calcium scale and negative CSI in fiberglass pools

Hi All, Long time lurker. I’ve been battling a calcium scale issue the last few years and trying to get answer. Will keeping CSI in negative reverse calcium scale on its own and dissolve back into water? I have the classic chalky areas on walls, floors, steps and seats. I have used a piece...
