    White crystals forming on plaster

The CSI is high on my logs because it doesn't show what my pH is after I add MA. I always test *then* add, but my CSI is just below 0 actually because when I add that 12oz of MA it brings my pH down to 7.8 or so.

    White crystals forming on plaster

I think I'd have to drain some water. I couldn't even see what it was until I picked some off with my fingernail. The surface isn't dense with the stuff like I'm seeing in the photos posted here. It's sparse. And they're not pillar-like

    White crystals forming on plaster

I'm not sure what you're suggesting. You want me to partially drain the spa for this? And what do you mean by "pinpoint"? I'll admit a lot of the information provided here is a bit overly scientific for me. Maybe that's unavoidable. But it's hard to understand it all.

    White crystals forming on plaster

Ok interesting. The past year my CH has been rising. It's at 600 now and the CH test has been difficult to perform as well; I've had to post about that a few times here and find ways to make the test less subjective. According to Pool Math, 600 is "within range", and no one here has seemed...

    White crystals forming on plaster

I didn't notice these during the summer. I noticed using the spa this winter that something sharp like thorns was poking my legs. There are small and jagged white crystals stuck to the plaster in the spa. It's been too cold to see if they're in the pool as well. Is this salt or calcium or...

    Heater running during freeze protection

I noticed this morning when I woke up that steam was coming from my spa. For some reason the heater was running when the system went into freeze protection. My best guess is that Jandy's freeze protection mode doesn't disable the heater even if it's left on in standby mode. I typically leave the...

    Jandy LED light dead

My pool hasn't even been open a full year yet and one of the Jandy LED lights looks to be dead. I see faint red & green dots (I guess that's the RG in RGB) but it's not fully on or anything. Should I contact my PB for a warranty repair or is this something I can/should fix myself? Below is the...

    CH is the worst test....

I asked about #1 early on. My pool finished construction and opened in March 2023. Since then, I was aiming for about 7.5 pH. In about 2 days, it would go back up to 8.2. I do not run water features unless people are in the pool. Spillovers, bubblers, sheers -- they're all off. My understanding...

    CH is the worst test....

I don't use cal hypo or add CH. Is it possible it came from my plaster? I may have been using too much acid for several months. I was adding about 32oz every 2 days to keep up with the demand. There's marks on my plaster where I pour acid into the pool. I'm not sure if that's from me or the...

    CH is the worst test....

I know I've posted about this before. I got some really great advice, in particular the notes section from this page: https://www.troublefreepool.com/blog/2019/01/18/calcium-hardness/ I put 5 drops R12 before the test and I don't really feel like that's helping anymore. It's getting difficult...

Spa slowly draining in freeze protection mode

My spillover was working in freeze protection. But it only seemed to work when it was in pool circulation mode. During the time it switches to spa mode, spillover will not run. The behavior was a little wonky but my spa was definitely filling up. I could also see it working from my cameras...

Spa slowly draining in freeze protection mode

So far the normal freeze protection mode with spillover 3 times a day is working fine. I don't feel like there's any issue with ice forming on the spillover tiles... not much ice has formed anyway. I could see it being a problem if we went weeks with these temps though... the ice might built up...

Spa slowly draining in freeze protection mode

Does that mean it's expected that I will be tinkering with my schedule based on the seasons every year? Might not be a big deal, but it's kind of a pain. I wish Jandy had "seasonal" schedules or schedule profiles, so I could easily remember those settings in the software. EDIT: Looking at my...

Spa slowly draining in freeze protection mode

As reassuring as it is to hear this, can you explain how things are fine when the spa is draining?

Spa slowly draining in freeze protection mode

Couple of additional things: 1. My aqualink panel is already set up to use spillover, it's just not tied to freeze protection in any way 2. I am noticing that even though freeze protection is active, my scheduled spillover mode still comes on. I have this setup to run about 30 minutes twice a...

Spa slowly draining in freeze protection mode

Current air temp is 12F and expected to remain below freezing for the next 3 days or so. This is the first time my freeze protection has been running this long. I woke up this morning and noticed my spa water is just below the tile with maybe 2-3" of plaster visible. Based on my searching...

    Winter questions

Thank you JJ and Newdude, you gave me exactly the kind of information and confidence I was looking for. I must have not worded my post very constructively based on some of the responses I got. I'm being told to spend less time worrying what others are doing but that's exactly how I've learned...

    Winter questions

And what about the cleaner, insulation, and skimmers that I also asked about? Do folks do any of that stuff? I already knew how freeze protection worked, and that wasn't the purpose of my post. Maybe I'm being misunderstood, but I'm not trying to use stuff outside of how it was designed and I'm...

    Winter questions

Part of my post is trying to understand what "freeze protection as designed" means. I'm just trying to learn what considerations to make and how to make sure I have freeze protection configured properly. Not sure what your comment is supposed to tell me.

    Winter questions

Hey folks, I still haven't hit my first anniversary with my pool yet (it finished March 2023) so I haven't really had to go through a full winter experience yet. I wanted to take a moment to make sure I'm prepared for a freeze, if it does come. Last thing I want to do is panic and not know what...

Strange discoloration around the autofill eyeball

What does the vitamin C do with iron? Is there anything I should/could do to prevent staining in the future? Thank you for your help.

Strange discoloration around the autofill eyeball

I have an autofill for my pool. The water comes out of an eyeball to get into the pool. Since summer, I've noticed a brown/red stain around that eyeball, which has affected the plaster around it a little bit as well. I haven't noticed it getting worse. Does anyone know what the cause is? Is this...

CH getting really high, TA getting low

I bought this exact one and I'm returning it. It doesn't read any amount of water. Even if the unit wasn't defective, I'm concerned that most of these won't detect water with such a low flow rate. If anyone has personal experience with a different model I'm happy to try again. But I'm going to...

CH getting really high, TA getting low

Today I measured above 8.2 pH (the color was a darker purple than the test kit goes to). I "guesstimated" that it's about 8.4. When I punch that into PoolMath along with the temperature of 58F, it says my CSI is -0.04, which seems perfect. If I lower my pH to 7.8, my CSI becomes -0.520 which is...

CH getting really high, TA getting low

If it were an issue with the valve, wouldn't I expect to see water in my spillover popup drain? I do not see water constantly leaking from there. EDIT: I will also say, I have a "watagate" attachment for my spillover drain in the pool that I sometimes attach to capture rain water. The water...
