Keeping pH in check during week long vacation

Next month the family and I are heading to Yellowstone for a week. It usually takes 2 days for my pH to go from 7.5 to 8.2. I am definitely testing chlorine, pH, and adding MA every 2 days (you can see this in my logs). I found a thread here that explains a solution involving turning off the...

My pH still rises really quickly and it concerns me

I cannot see the liquid level from outside of the jug. To be clear, I'm not putting my eye really close. I'm keeping it maybe 2 ft away (arm length or so). It's not much difference than the distance the bottle is at from my eyes when I'm pouring from it. I appreciate the concern though. I'd...

My pH still rises really quickly and it concerns me

I started drawing lines on the bottle. I can see them very clearly when I peek through the hole at the top. So this might work. I'm sure my fourths are not accurate due to the curvature of the bottle at the top, but probably good enough. I appreciate all the advice.

My pH still rises really quickly and it concerns me

haha. Nice programming attempt. I'll have mercy on you and forego the code review feedback :ROFLMAO: I think the reason I'm being a little more picky about my accuracy is that in other threads I've had a lot of issues with my CSI during the winter time. I was told to keep it as close to 0, but...

My pH still rises really quickly and it concerns me

Ok I'll give this a try. I really wish there was a proper dispenser for this stuff though. It doesn't need to be automatic. Just something that I can transfer the acid into, and maybe turn a dial to dispense a certain amount in oz when I push a button.

I've tried that but can't see through the jug, even if I hold it up

My pH still rises really quickly and it concerns me

Is there something I can use to measure and pour MA without being exposed to the fumes? Despite my best effort, the fumes always get into my eyes and lungs. I've been told to pour directly from the jug which I've done for the past year and never had an issue with fumes. But I'm terrible at...

My pH still rises really quickly and it concerns me

Pool Math says to go from TA of 70 to 50, get my pH to 7.0-7.2 and then aerate to increase pH. I assume aeration is just a matter of turning on all my water features (sheers, slide, bubblers/spillover). I'll try to find posts on the forum to help walk me through the process. I'm sure that...

My pH still rises really quickly and it concerns me

How much acid do you buy to last you 6 months? I usually buy 8 gallons every time I go to lowes, and that amount definitely isn't enough for 6 months. Not for as hungry as my pool is, at least...

The two pack Kemtek brand at Lowe's is about the same, maybe a little cheaper.

My pH still rises really quickly and it concerns me

Man you aren't kidding. $5.50 per gallon is amazing. Too bad there are none close by. I've always known Atwood's to be a country town thing. I guess I'll keep buying my overpriced 20 baum at Lowe's :-(

What kind of brush do you use? The only one I have is the super long brush with the whale fin on it. It's definitely not for one handed use...

My pH still rises really quickly and it concerns me

Do you personally brush after? Or is that moot?

My pH still rises really quickly and it concerns me

That explains it, then. I assumed I had at least 5-10 seconds to get the brush going before it did anything. I'll probably just start measuring out the acid then so I can pour it slowly (probably ~30 seconds). If the acid doesn't get pushed out by the return, with a slow stream it should...

My pH still rises really quickly and it concerns me

I used to do that, but then I read somewhere that some people pour faster but brush after. So I opted for the latter, mainly for two reasons: 1) It's easier for me to "eyeball" an amount when I pour faster and 2) I'm admittedly too lazy to wait the 30 seconds it requires to pour that slow...

My pH still rises really quickly and it concerns me

I've brought up this issue before, and ultimately concluded that because my plaster is new, my pH levels rise quickly and thus the cycle of adding acid every two days isn't unusual. My pool opened in March 2023, and I can't help but remain bewildered and concerned with how fast my pH rises. If...

    White crystals forming on plaster

Update: Took a while, but I finally got the PB company to come out and look at the plaster issue in the spa. The owner acknowledges there's a plaster problem and didn't even try to blame it on me or water chemistry. So that was a huge milestone, I think. He did try to put it off on a bad gunite...

    Cyanuric acid recommendation

Hey folks. I've been buying this CYA on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011AD536G However, they've been out of stock for a really long time and I'm getting close to needing more, so I can't wait any longer. Could I get some alternative product recommendations? Ideally on Amazon...

Travertine pavers are too hot to stand on

Just living with it. I wear flip flops around the pool now. It's annoying, but not worth spending tens of thousands of dollars to fix. I just got unlucky and got a terrible pool builder that gave me terrible materials. Life lesson.

    White crystals forming on plaster

I'm currently in the process of ordering refill kits for my TFPro since TFTestKits is running a sale right now. Is it worth getting the taylor version of the pH test simply for the higher granularity? Honestly it would be nice to have 0.2 granularity from 7.2 to something like 8.6, but that...

    White crystals forming on plaster

Thank you so much for the explanations! I've learned so much from this post, but that goes for every post I make here. I really appreciate this community and how helpful everyone is. In my case, my pool has been open for about a year now and I've never had to add baking soda. I think TA from my...

    White crystals forming on plaster

Thank you everyone. I read the article that ajw linked, however unfortunately this article did not help me understand phosphates and carbonates. What I did gather is that carbon & phosphorous are necessary for life, but I still am not sure what "carbonates" and "phosphates" are in layman's...

    White crystals forming on plaster

My Taylor K-1106 test kit came in today. I took a sample of water from the SPA and got a measurement of 125ppb. I'm not sure what my "target" range is for phosphates as I do not track this in Pool Math. But hopefully folks here can comment. I have no idea what phosphates are so if someone...

    White crystals forming on plaster

PB said they are coming out to look at the spa and "figure out what's going on". One thing I want to be prepared for is if they try to blame the spa damage near the waterline tile on the tile coming off the wall or something. They'll probably take every opportunity they can to blame the previous...

    White crystals forming on plaster

I have the one from the tf pro kit. I set it to 8.2 when it matches that color. I don't try to guess an in-between. I do wish this pH test had a higher level of granularity

    White crystals forming on plaster

Oh I don't intend to show them my pool math logs. If that's what you were thinking. He wants CL, pH, and TA. I will send him 7.0, 7.8, and 60. And I guess from now on I'll wait to do the tests until I add MA even though it makes me uncomfortable to do that without testing to see if I need it first.

    White crystals forming on plaster

No sadly. Fortunately I already keep pH at 7.5-7.8. They weren't very clear on what exact "readings" they wanted either. I'll ask them for clarification.

    White crystals forming on plaster

PB is requesting "current readings of my pool water". What information should I send them? Quite frankly I'm afraid to send them anything because they'll use it against me somehow. On the other hand, if I flat out refuse that doesn't look good either I think.
