    New Deck-o-seal this year...

I used 2 bags - but I have a cover, so only 3 sides to do if/when I get around to doing the whole pool. I did one side and the end - so 30ft and 15ft. I just ran out at the end and could have used a tiny bit more. So around 20ft per bag for my setup. I have a pretty thick joint along part of...

    New Deck-o-seal this year...

Mine had a little visible wear after 2/3rds of the pool - but not enough to make it not work - it just dulled a little where it was hitting the coping and decking as I cut - I think it should be fine for the whole pool.

    New Deck-o-seal this year...

Dirk, the tool has a rubber mount that makes it more forgiving if I remember correctly. It is certainly a metal blade - but it doesn't have much bite on something like stone - I think I held it against my concrete a few times and it barely did anything. It did help peel the old stuff off nicely...

    What's your current pool temp?

52° water temp and it is hailing and 46° outside right now (it snowed just a couple of miles north of us last night). This is why I never put in solar heating for our pool - we never get swimable weather in March, or most of April for that matter - by the end of April our pool warms up on its...

    New Deck-o-seal this year...

I used a skateboard, to move more easily, and a cordless multitool with a caulk blade to remove the old Sikaflex. I also bought a really thick kneeling pad - and also used knee pads. So far after two years the Deck-O-Seal is doing much better than the Sikaflex did.

New build in California, design phase

RH We have had no trouble with the coping stones on the stainless brackets. It is nice to be able to slide a coping stone out of the way to get into the vault as needed. We have had a little bit of rubbing on the underside of one coping piece when the full rolled up cover hits it a tiny bit -...

New build in California, design phase

Have you ever had anyone quote building your pool? Once we did that it became clear that our ideas were often better than the pool "designers". Having said that they often offered their 3D design images to try to get us to sign with their company - even if it was really my design, but in 3D, it...

New build in California, design phase

Our builder used PoolEng.com - I think most builders in the area, around us at least, tend to use them for drawings and structural work. Many of our subs came from as far away as your neck of the woods (Petaluma)... Get a copy of Pool Studio and design it the way you (or the "client") wants...

    Backup power.

I have a Nissan LEAF electric vehicle for extra storage when needed - and in the event that the Powerwall (battery) gets charged to 100% during the day, while the power is out, the battery would at that point shut down the solar - since there is nowhere for that extra electricity to go. By...

    Backup power.

Wow! - 35kw - that is a good sized PV setup - mine is only 4.4kw and it pretty much would zero us out if it wasn't for the pesky hot tub I bought a couple of years ago...that thing is our biggest drain on power.

    Backup power.

Reminds me of my ACT essay question: Write an essay if you agree or disagree with the following statement. "The more things change the more they stay the same" 18 year old me wrote that as the world changes, and advances, there is no way it is the same anymore. So I didn't agree with the...

    Backup power.

Dirk - prepare to wait a while for the Powerwalls - we put our order in last May as I finally could justify things - and they just installed it a couple of weeks ago. There are a few local PV installers that promised faster delivery - but they also wanted a ridiculous price of $20K for one...

    Backup power.

If I had a larger PV system and say 2 power walls I would be pretty self sufficient - extra powerwalls are $6500 You should be able to do a PV battery - I don't have any special medical needs or rate (yet anyway). There are tons of Powerwall installs in PG&E land - and if you are in a really...

    Backup power.

We just added a Tesla Powerwall to our house this month. We already had 4.4kw of PV solar on the roof. We only went with one Powerwall and it is wired to power essential loads in the house. PG&E is not changing anything on our grandfathered NEM 1.0 - and our E-6 rate plan - (E-6 will go away...

Old hot tub guy looking to learn new tricks...

Adustments to PH get further and further apart - that means your equilibrium point is closer - but you aren't getting the pH low enough (aim for 7.2) to get there a little quicker.

You could try a little more MA to drop it closer to 7.2 to see how it handles that - it sounds like you are getting closer to it stabilizing. As far as chlorine goes - that doesn't sound out of the ordinary at all - I have a smaller tub and it needed around 1oz per before I added the SWCG.

Old hot tub guy looking to learn new tricks...

With 31% MA you will need around a teaspoon at a time to adjust your levels. Be careful to not add to much - luckily MA does not build up. The only issue is using too much. I use 14% stuff and even dilute it to use in the hot tub and have a bottle sitting near my tub for adjustments. Using...

Old hot tub guy looking to learn new tricks...

MA=Muriatic Acid - I wait for the PH to stop rising - preferrably looking for it settling in the 7.5 - 7.8 range and once it stays there for a long period of time I am good. I sometimes hit it one time extra with MA and it will stick at 7.2 for a couple of weeks - I am OK with that but aim for...

use MA to lower PH - lower the pH to 7.2 - run the jets and test/test/test and once the PH stops rising then you are good to go.

Pool in Campbell, Ca. Now under contract!

With a cover in Campbell you might not need Solar - I can get 90's temps for much of the summer over in a warm part of Santa Cruz - Campbell is a bit warmer than here for sure. The supervisor on our pool build suggested holding off on adding solar to see how our pool behaved. We don't really...

    Last Swim

I love to swim after Halloween as it is typically warm around here through the first of November. I was able to sneak in a swim last Sunday when it was a nice 80° outside. The pool was a very refreshing 67°. It actually felt pretty good floating around in the cool water. My family thinks I am...

    Aquapure 1400 121 Error

@PoolGate I have had a similar issue to what you reported just before your unit died for good - "Aquapure Not Found". This has been happening for 5 years now - fortunately it only happens every once in a while (more often on really hot days). If I restart the pump things usally start working...

Beautiful pool - new owner - help me keep it sparkling and fresh!

Depending on how much rain we get this winter - hopefully a steady amount and no big storms because of the fires - I find that I can replace a ton of my water with rain water. Now San Jose gets a lot less rain than we do just a few miles away from you over here in Santa Cruz, but it wouldn't...

    Saltron Mini in hot tub

I have had one for a little over a year and it helps me be a little more lazy - so I like it. The amount of salt the Saltron Mini needs is 2500ppm which isn't enough to really damage things in the tub any more than regular hot tub water could. As long as you keep your PH in check then I...
