Questions about FC, CYA, and PH. New pool owner.

Did you get your chlorine level up? I'd suggest unscented bleach or pool chlorinator (the link to poolmath below is helpful)

    Fresh fill - cloudy water?

While I don't recall the article detail, I do know I read, comparitvely, drinking water out of the tap can have higher "active" (unbound...) Chlorine ppm than the hot tub. Not necessarily will have, but allowably can. Just remember that if you smell chlorine it's chlorimines, and that means you...

Potential newbie here. Pull up a chair for some dumbest questions

Heater elements are expendables (expensive pumps might be expendable at some point too), filter needs weekly cleaning. And when they break it will be in the dead of winter and when plumbing freezes and breaks, you get to dig through foam to find and fix. I suggest buying used if the answers...

    Fresh fill - cloudy water?

Sounds good. There are two good reasons for doing that. Without any CYA there is a higher probability that chlorine will be harsh on the skin and "sensitivities" (I've never had an issue that I can recall so can't really describe). Secondly, a lower minimum level without the buffering from cya...

    Fresh fill - cloudy water?

You do know every time you add dichlor it's bumping up the CYA, result being you now need higher CHL level to maintain sanitation? Also, you mentioned testing fc immediately after using the tub. What you leave behind in the tub after a soak likely takes time to sanitize ... fc may be even...

    Fresh fill - cloudy water?

If it has an ozone generator, it will consume fc (same for uv?).

More difficult than I expected. (noob here)

Always shoot for the high end of the recommend range so losses never bring it below the minimum. Is it ok to find it below that high end, yes, but at first it's best to develop a feel for where you expect it to read. A better safe than sorry situation... Too much chl won't harm you or hurt...

More difficult than I expected. (noob here)

Mercuric acid works more to your advantage than dry acid. Also note for future reference you do bring fc to slam levwl during the purge to make sure what you dislodge isn't going to harm you should you come in contact with it. (No need to maintain) Definitely reread the sticky if you are still...

More difficult than I expected. (noob here)

When adding the dichlor, you can get accurate CYA level off measuring how much you add and % (or use poolmath). If you purge before you leave instructions will likely end up being confusing, otoh, using it as-is with CC higher than .5 is a risk if it gets used. You asked for my advice, I'd say...

I seem to recall you already ordered/received the Ahh-Some! order? Anyway, it does work and if you did it certainly couldn't hurt! I used it once on the 2nd fill, and almost nothing came out, even added a bit more when I noted there wasn't much with no effect. Truth be told, slam levels can do...

More difficult than I expected. (noob here)

Chart For 70 min is 5, 80 it's 6. SLAM to knock down CC about 30. SLAM min is 20 on Ben's "2.0" chart from 2010 (no idea how or why he updated it from the 1990's version but I have his original copied somewhere - maybe try 20 first and see what happens? ). Note you targeted ~5 and 3 hours...

You gots expert advice X2, but since you asked, yes (you probably should dump it after purging). why Congrats on the new tub and welcome to TFP! I'm going to make one additional suggestion, some folks throw in something to soak up oils that float to the surface, tennis balls or the like...

    Fresh fill - cloudy water?

MPS can break down stuff chlorine leaves behind. Some people are sensitive to it, and it does skew CC readings unless you use a neutralizing reagent (which I bought but find too much trouble figuring out how to use). When I say can, perhaps it's just as accurate to say might ... it's...

trichlor vs liquid chlorine and PH

Spa's do require work, so the SWG can be quite helpful in that regard. They also tend to outlive break-even so potentially save time and eventually, money too. I prefer daily dosing at the moment. I'm surprised the borites didn't make an observable difference. It does with mine. (Not much...

    Curious about recommended SLAM values

Funny story this, but the levels deemed prudent to combat algae were "developed" empirically decades ago, then "confirmed" on paper therafter. It was experienced based, and continues to be thus. If I say more my post gets unceremoniously deleted...

trichlor vs liquid chlorine and PH

I'm not too familiar with SWG chemistry differences, but I would think that with liquid chlorine you should never have to do that... I know what you mean, but the filters really should be at least rinsed off every month, period adjusted for usage (bather hours, wrinsed off suits...) Rotating...

    Balboa 120 vs 240

I don't think I understood your question fully until I listened to the video. While I suspect the advice is too quick to jump to the conclusions that led to the recommendation to change the main board, I'd have to say there isn't enough information to be sure you have an incorrect transformer...

    Balboa 120 vs 240

240 volts is two 120 volt circuits. They are 180 degrees out of phase with each other, but yeah, the transformer could be fed off one phase of the 240 volt input.
