How does salt generator setting impact salt & chlorine levels

Get one of the recommended test kits, with the salt addition. Readings on the generator itself can be pretty far off. Best to use a standardized, repeatable, test before making adjustments. Believe the test kit far more than the reading on the generator. As noted, the salt never goes away...

Question for experienced pool owners - can you explain my experience today with settled green somewhat-non-filterable bottom dust?

@Lake Placid described my history (over decades) exactly. Most of the summer was spent sucking the yellow "dust" out of the pool after a one time "shock" that turned whatever green I had to yellow. Then using magic chems to clear what became very cloudy water. Turn up the amount of Cl...

Question for experienced pool owners - can you explain my experience today with settled green somewhat-non-filterable bottom dust?

It perfectly describes an algae outbreak. I spent decades with similar problems before TFP and my SWCG. Green growing patches in places can be sticky and need a bit of scrubbing to remove. Hitting it with a higher dose of CL kills it, and what is suspended settles out on the the sides and the...

Can't figure out on how to remove casings from old anchors

Or...just leave them empty and drill new holes for the new anchors. Fill the old ones level with concrete patch. That's what the pool company did when I replaced my mesh cover years ago - the new cover had a different spacing for the anchors so my old wouldn't have worked anyway. After a...

Question on using the Cyclone blower

I just closed, and using the vacuum hose on the Cyclone, discovered that I could easily cover the end of the hose with my palm to block the flow completely. Yet it did a fantastic job in blowing out the lines. So confirmed, pretty low pressure, but very high volume.

A couple of freezing nights coming up - keep the pool running or drain?

No worries - keep your pump running at least during the coldest parts. It's all about the water temp. If the pool water is warmer it will warm whatever it flows through, and therefore no risk of freezing. If it wasn't moving, smaller amounts could cool down to the below freezing air temp and...

Lower salt cell output when water temp goes down?

FYI - my high season, I was running mine at 60%. A little over a week ago, I only had to run it at 10%. Water temp got to 49 this past weekend, and the cell stopped generating, so the pool is now closed for the winter. But the level is mostly about sunlight, rather than water temp.

    Remove Salt Cell for Winter?

Minnesota too. Last winter was my first with one, so I removed it. Circupool (mine) says it is not needed to be done. I just finished closing, and left it in place. Did make sure that all the water was out of it so there is no chance for ice damage. We'll see come next spring....

    Low alk, tough to raise

My tap water tests in the same ranges, so I tend to buy several big bags of baking soda each spring. I haven't worried too much about inconsistencies in results when going from fairly low levels to higher. I blame complexities in the actual pool chemistry, as well as assumptions in the math...

Pool heater - natural gas pipe buried only 9 inches deep

I'd call my local building code official and ask. In my town, they try to make it out the same day if there is a suspected code violation. He may accept the builders suggestion, or may require him to bury it deeper.

    DIY Cyclone filter cleaner

There was a thread a few months ago about a DIY version of the $300 stand that spins as you clean your cartridge filters. There have been a few other posts prior about alternatives using old office chair bases, and other items. I had promised to note about my attempts, when the time to clean...

Overlay porcelain pavers over existing concrete deck?

Can't comment on the price - but back when I did my kitchen, and then later my fireplace, the really high costs drove me to DIY. But I wouldn't be qualified at all to trust my work on an outdoor install around a pool. All you can do is see if there are any others that would quote the job.

    Dropped my pool guy

Odd that your CH dropped from 150 to 100, and your TA went from 60 to 90 CH isn't anything to worry about with a vinyl pool, unless it gets extremely high (many hundreds). Just odd that it dropped. IF your TA number is correct, you are in a perfect spot. High TA (like the previous 90) can...

Yes. Tell him you've already added "shock".

Pool Cover and Triclor Causing Headaches

What is the specific chemical(s) in the 5kg tub? Usually "Chlor Hypo" is sold as a liquid (actual name is Sodium Hypochlorite) so would be in gallon (or liter) containers. If it is a powdered material, it likely also has either CYA in it or Calcium. You've learned that you don't want the CYA...

Overlay porcelain pavers over existing concrete deck?

I'd wonder about having any of the new pavers overhanging. I'd worry about an edge breaking off someday in the future, with no support under the cantilevered part. Plus perhaps a skin scraper as people boost themselves out of the pool onto the deck.

    Low alk, tough to raise

Sounds like @JamesW has the answer. Add another 2.5 lbs. Don't be surprised if it jumps from 30 to 50. PoolMath is a best approximation, and the testing has margins of error. So sneaking up on it is best.

    Low alk, tough to raise

This might be a clue: "and also purchase another alkalinity test to compare" What are you using for testing? Pool stores, test strips, etc. have all proven over and over to be wildly unreliable and inaccurate....

Getting a Jandy TrueClear replacement SWG cell

Your CA level has no bearing on the pH. So yes, you can do the drop to the low 7's to decrease the TA. Pool math's effects of adding predicted that with the12 oz MA, your pH should have dropped by .3, and your TA by 4 ppm. Given the estimations involved, and the precision we have in testing...

Spots of algae even with chlorine 1-3

Nominally that amount should raise your FC to almost 6. Other Texans can respond, but that usage this time of year seems pretty high (it varies due to climate/sun). You likely still have algae that is quickly consuming it. Now with the refill, what are all your test results? If your CYA has...

Getting a Jandy TrueClear replacement SWG cell

Since you have a leak, you may want to test your fill water for TA and pH. It could be a battle if you are trying to move your pool in one direction, when the fill water is taking it in the other. In general, adding MA will drop your pH fairly quickly (let it mix for a day or two between...

    Taylor 9265 Magnetic Stirrer Speedstir

These guys sell both - I've had the Smart Stir for a couple of years, and it still has the initial batteries. Magnetic Stirring Devices TFTESTKITS ran out of those for their kits, and subbed in Taylor for a while. Now they offer a choice. That may be why you've seen more references to Taylor...

Feedback on replumbing plan - upsize to 2", switch to 45s

I just did similar a few weeks ago, but all mine was 1.5 everywhere. I made sure everything on the equipment side of the Jandy valves was 2". I assumed any higher flow gain from that could easily be handled by the splits to the inground piping (ie - 2 1.5 in ground legs had more volume...

How long can you stay at shock level before it eats away you liner, pump and heater?

As far as I understand, a fair amount of the Cl is "bound" to the CYA, leaving only a smaller amount as "active". Our tests measure the total - bound up and active. But, as the amount of active gets used up, some of the bound Cl gets released from the CYA in order to maintain equilibrium...

    Taylor CYA testing

What were you at before the dichlor add? Are you sure your Tub actually has 254 gallons? Methinks something is off in how you are viewing the dot and judging its disappearance. You can buy a standardized solution to verify your CYA testing - R-7065 CYA Standard 50ppm (2oz) Using it, you can...

Buying a house with a pool. Can you help with how all this looks

Equipment looks in great shape. It is a pretty basic setup. Maybe a bit too basic, but we'll get into that if any operational issues raise their head later. Show a pic taken from the from the street side. And, of course, the pool itself, It look like your pool has either two skimmers for...

Shop here rather than the Circupool site: CircuPool EDGE-40 Salt Chlorine Generator | Discount Salt Pool I made that mistake. Discount (which I think is really the same company) always runs "deals" on Circupool items. I love the 5% increments, which is what pushed me to the RJ. The RJ45...

Dead algae piles daily coming from the filter.

Your choice whether to replace at some point or not. Sand doesn't ever wear out. New sand will be extremely dusty, so has to be mega rinsed before firing up the filter. So take out your old sand, and inspect the lower laterals and other components to see if they need repair. Put either your...

    New saltwater pool start up

CYA amount won't cause Cl to increase, it just determines what the optimum level of Cl should be. Yes, just dial down your SWG to 25% and see where it ends up after a few days. Depending on sun, pool use, etc. you will then have to tweak it again up or down to find where it doesn't change...

ENJOY! Kit and cloudy water all summer

There is almost nothing out in google-land about what the Enjoy! system contains. If you search here, there are a couple of older posts. It is Sodium Dichlor, which is Chlorine already. Likely with copper and maybe a hint of silver (they say) as the "minerals". It generally is bad to...
