    Lower CYA levels

Same for me. This place is awesome. Sure, I'll bite. This article's advice simply doesn't apply, for a number of reasons. TLDR: You could definitely try it out, it'd probably work, and it'd be great if you reported back with your experience as well as your total chlorine cost. To be very...

    Calling water experts

Plus a very small (nonlethal) amount of salt and possibly borates. It's my understanding 50ppm borates is completely safe in swimming water, but it's probably not a great idea to cook and drink with it as a primary source. I think the article I read was a medium sized dog would have to drink...

Should I drain the pool now?

That's great. Good sleuthing. One thing I notice about your heater plumbing: it looks like that ball valve is basically just a pressure bleed valve if your pump was to exceed the max flow rate of the heater. It's not uncommon to see those on heater and SWG install manuals. You'd need a...

New to Pool ownership - high CYA and algae

I don't see any reason why not. Not 100% sure because I can't do that on my pool... Keep a close eye on your CYA level as you'll be slightly diluting your chems with every drain / refill.

Should I drain the pool now?

Thanks for sharing the equipment photo. Do you have a spa? On the left side my first guess is that valve lets you select spa vs pool on filtered water returning from the heater. If you don't have a spa, that valve would almost certainly be your bypass, given the floor cleaner curator valve...

    DPD powder contaminated in shipment

I've been using the powder, just smooshed the clumps back into powder. It seems to be working just fine. I didn't get a chemistry answer to the question, mostly just a "ahh, use it up and you'll be fine." I did receive a coupon code for the cost of a replacement, will redeem that when I'm...

Tide pod challenge of pool maintenance…Vodka SLAM!

I've always preferred the corn-based Texas rubbing alcohol flavor of Titos over the scandinavian potato rubbing alcohol varieties and definitely the russian grain rubbing alcohol flavors. And don't get me started about the gimmicky triple distilled, charcoal filtered rubbing alcohol tasting...

What to start stocking up on to open swamp pool next spring

All of the above. When you get your test kit, it's a good idea to know your fill water's chemistry, specifically alkalinity and calcium hardness. That will help you plan the other chems you'll need like muriatic acid for high TA and pH control. Calcium hardness isn't super critical in your...

    CYA lowered unexpectedly

That definitely is weird. The only two ways I'm aware to drop CYA to zero are: 1.) Drain 100% of pool water and refill, and 2.) a certain bacteria grows in the pool after extended periods of 0ppmFC and the bacteria eats the CYA. Did your CYA fall to 0 during your trip? Did the pool go green...

Should I drain the pool now?

I've been wondering the same about my system. How familiar are you with the individual pipes going to and from the pool? It's possible you might have a bypass already plumbed in. My pool definitely doesn't, I'd have to add that on my own by hooking up the nonfunctioning port in my deep end...

    CYA Removal

YOWWWZER! Looks like you got your wish... What were you using for chlorine? I see you mentioned the tabs were CYA test tabs, not trichlor. Tell us more about your worries. Is your fill water super expensive? Looks like you'll probably need at least 2 partial drain / refills if you...

    CYA Removal

I've also heard another good way to eliminate CYA is to let your FC drop to zero for extended periods of time and a certain bacterial will eventually grow eat it and create a foam on the pool surface. But that might be more trouble than it's worth. Probably best to do a partial drain / refill...

I was in the Navy ROTC at A&M, and they would send us out into the fleet for training during the summers before Jr and Sr years. Leaving pool open year round

What kicked our butts was something like 9 days after we got the keys to the house last October was that huge ice storm that demolished everyone's trees and power lines. We had no power for several days. I get a chuckle out of the posts that say, "Practice draining your equipment when it's 100...
