@leron85 after some further reading on iron bacteria - you will likely need to SLAM your pool with liquid chlorine. Fair warning - it may cause discoloration to your pool water and may cause some staining due to the iron content in your pool. To combat this, you’ll want to also do the Poly-fil...

    Extremely Cloudy Water

Well hot dog… I just realized you’re in Indiana too. My house filtration is an absurd set up by Kinetico - 3 points of filtration before it enters the house for toilets/shower, then another 5 points of filtration for consumable water… I had C&J Well come out and do an inspection too. House was...

If you have iron in your pool water, and it’s showing noticeable stains on your liner then you need to filter your pool water through a Polyfil Bucket. I can send you full instructions, materials, and before/during/after pics if you need guidance. This is my area of specialty 😊

If you have iron you need to get some vitamin c tablets crushed into a sock and see if that will lift them.

    Failed OCLT?

This is definitely a family affair! I taught both my kids and their friends how to test FC and PH. That way if they want to swim they know what is safe and what isn’t. Never hurts to have a chemistry lesson involved! Keep at it Chuck and Fam!

Bad Batch of Chlorine? Potential Swamp incoming?

I added enough LC to get me to an FC of 11 this morning. Let me see how I look tonight. If I increase CYA, you think by 10 to 60? PoolMath tells me I only need to add about 6.5 Oz to get there; and then throws me the "you're out of range, and the only way to reduce is to drain/refill"...

Bad Batch of Chlorine? Potential Swamp incoming?

Alright folks - measuring CYA - I am at a 50. Should I really add more?

Bad Batch of Chlorine? Potential Swamp incoming?

Good news! Passed OCLT! FC 5 PH 7.7 So I don’t have bad chlorine. I don’t have a potential swamp. I was just not thinking about the heat wave and UV for normal chlorine loss. Thankfully it’s going to be much cooler today - mid 70s. I’ll still dose high to land in range! Thanks everyone!!!

Bad Batch of Chlorine? Potential Swamp incoming?

Okay I remembered to do OCLT tonight! Just measured: FC 5.5 PH 7.7 Since I’m above a 3 on FC, I am not adding more LC per instructions n Tomorrow - before the sun hits the pool, come out and measure again… and if I have lost more than 1 ppm of FC, we have something going on, right? Do I...

    Failed OCLT?

The only way for an effective SLAM is liquid chlorine. Lots and lots of jugs… but some places have refillable containers!

Finally joined! First time pool owner based in Texas.

Welcome aboard! Brownish dust like coloring sounds like algae. When you sweep it does it “bloom”? Might want to read up on the SLAM process and take a walk through Pool School! Plenty of happy and helpful folks around here to get you moving in the right directions!

    White Murky Water

With a CYA of 50, your FC level during SLAM should be 20 How often can you check your FC? It's recommended during SLAM to get out there about every 2 hours... and raise the FC back to SLAM level. Example: 9 AM - FC is 20 11 AM - FC is 16... dose with enough Liquid Chlorine to get back to FC...

New to pools; Water milky white, cloudy; with Iron

PH won't be accurate until you're under a 10 on FC. Totally okay to be paranoid about cloudiness... the "this is too good to be true" factor is a real thing! Take down the bucket - and see how that goes. Then start to naturally let your FC drop to the TOP of the range of FC for your CYA... I'm...

New to pools; Water milky white, cloudy; with Iron

Well, looky there! So pretty! Taking down the bucket requires some skill and caution. If you have the ability to drain it out the backside - do that first. You don't want to undo all your hard work! Might want to check your return hose too - sometimes the iron gets accumulated in there and...
