We just built a new pool and are having issues with the spa spillover. The spa (7’ x 7” inside; 49sf; 24” raised; with a 7’-6” wide spillway) is having issues moving water over the spillway (while running Jandy 2.7 HP VS booster pump) without water splashing back against the rock and ledge below. This has caused water to run out of the pool and has washed away some of the grout.

The builder has tried to correct this by converting the 7’-6” open spillway into (2) smaller spillways as shown in the attached photos. The water is moving better now, but water is still running back against the rock and lower ledge thus washing away grout. The builder says this is normal and will not be an issue. Also, we have to keep the booster pump running continuously or water will not clear the rocks or lower ledge at all. Thus water is still hitting the ledge and running out of the pool when the booster pump is off.

Would appreciate anyone that can verify if this is normal or is there something that can be done to correct the issue?

Thanks,

Duck

Welcome to TFP.

I have a spa spillover setup like yours. But mine is not cut so close to the steps.

I would have shortened the spillover on the sides to move the water away from the pool edges rather than divide the spillover.

What automation do you have?

My spillover only runs for 20 minutes twice a day at 9AM and 2Pm to refresh the water in the spa. That limits erosion on the spillover area.

If we don’t run the booster pump the water will slowly flow over and hits the ledge and runs out of the pool along the ledge by the steps.

That is a design problem with the spillover edge being too close to the steps.

Show me your equipment pad and what pumps you have.

What model pumps do you have?

Equipment and pad photos attached. The model# on the pump(s) is: VSSHP270DV2A
The automation is: Jandy RS-PS6 automation system with iAqualink antenna

The builder’s solution to stop the water from running out by the steps is to cut some slits/grooves into the ledge alongside the step so water can fall through. He has already cut 2, but the water is still running out due to it is running up against the grout line along the rock and out of the pool.

My main issue is I don’t want to have to run the booster pump continuously and I am worried that the water running along the ledge below is accelerating grout removal.

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

You have three problems you are trying to fix:

  1. Needing to run your booster pump
  2. Water splashing out of the pool
  3. Erosion of the spa area from the water flow

For 1...

What RPM is the filter pump running at?

For 3...

You can enable SPILLOVER mode with S1 dip switch #3 on the main panel. When S1 switch #3 is on, AUX3 becomes the spillover control. If you have any relay connected to AUX3, you need to move it to an available Aux position.

With Spillover turned on by AUX3, the POOL/SPA return valve will move to the SPA position. Water will be suctioned out of the pool through the skimmers and returned to the spa.

The cam on the return actuator may need to be reset to fully close the spa return when in POOL mode.

I need to see larger, clearer pictures to see the details of your equipment and where your valves are set.

For 2 ...

Your builder does not know what he is doing and just trying things blindly.

I would put some bricks or blocks of wood to block the water on the sides of the spillover in the red areas below and find how far you need to cut back the spillover to keep the water from splashing out of the pool.

The above was the original design. They have since made the spillway smaller as seen in the following photo. Water still hits the ledge at times with booster pump running and all the time when booster pump off.

They balled it up.

The red area needs to be filled on both sides, and the corner spillover in green needs to be restored.

First thing you need to do is get the spillover correctly sized and shaped.

As I suggested earlier I would get rid of that corner bump and return to a smooth V corner spillover. Then experiment with blocks of different sizes to shorten the sides of the spillover until you get a water flow that does not splash out of the pool at any pump speed. Once you know the size the structure can be adjusted.

Surface tension can cause the water to wrap around the ledge and back to the tile. The fix is to put a notch sawcut/groove under the edge of the ledge to break the surface tension and have the water fall away. The notch should be 1/4" deep about 1/4" back from edge.

Second, you should enable SPILLOVER mode on dipswitch 3, schedule your spillover to run, and not run it continuously.

Third, once you get your spillover sized correctly and fixed you can adjust your pump speeds. Your speeds look much too fast. If you need to run that fast you may have problems with your plumbing or filter.
