I have a Purex DE ( Pentair now ) Pool filter that needs replacement.
In your experience, should I go with another DE filter or should I change it to Cartridge filter and should I go with Pentair or Jany?

Cartridge is a lot less hassle than DE. Whatever you do, go big. Pentair Clean & Clear plus 520sqft or Waterway 525 would be good for your size pool, if it will fit on your pad.

If you do go cartridge, put a 3 way diverter between the pump and the filter...gives you the ability to pump to waste.

Can you post some pictures of your pool and equipment pad?

Thanks for the imput. I have attached pics of the pool/spa and equipment room

You have the space. You will have to remove the valve on the DE filter too, there is no Backwash to a cartridge filter.
What is wrong with your DE filter?

Since the backwash valve would be removed with a cartridge filter you could move the filter tank away from the house (its touching the clamp now) and have some room for opening it when cleaning. Most filter tanks of a 300sq. ft. filter or larger are the same size as you have now in diameter, they just get taller. A large Pentair cartridge filter, or Waterway is about the same as you have now. I believe the Pentair still uses that same tank. Get a large (420 -520) filter and a VSP for filtration and only clean the filter yearly.

You do need to find the builder of that pool and have him service it for a year or more and maybe he would realize how to actually build the equipment area so that it can be serviced.

I’m in the process of hiring a new Pool Service and I’m interviewing few people most people want cartridge but some people prefer DE filters. Is there a brand that is superior in performance than the other or just a question of preference?

Preference and budget. Internally, virtually all filters of a type are the same. In the case of DE. they all use the same grids unless it is a cartridge DE.
