How much DE after a backwash

I cleaned my DE filter at the season start. It seemed like there was WAY too much DE. It holds 6-pounds. I was told to add 4.5 pounds after backwashing. I just completed a SLAM for mustard algae and am done. I have been only adding 3-pounds after backwash. Is that okay?

I was totally surprised at the amount of DE in the filter when I took it apart. I almost could not lift the filter put it was soooooo heavy.

Thanks

What model filter are we discussing?

The rule of thumb is to add 80% of the recommended DE after backwashing.

You should add 4.5 to 5 lbs of DE after backwashing, not 3.

Are you running the backwash cycle long enough to dump all the DE?

Yes, 4.5 is the amount I should add. Hayward 48sq ft. It holds 6 pounds at cleaning.

I run it until it gets to the bottom of the skimmer. I do not know how to set the valves to run it longer, so the skimmer doesn't empty.

1. Other than filtering, what happens if there is not enough DE and how would I know?

2. How long do you run it to remove the DE you are talking about?

Dirt clogs the grids instead of the DE and does not backwash off. You can observe it when you open the filter for a cleaning.

This your filter?

BACKWASH
a. Shut off the pump.
b. Set Filter Control Valve to BACKWASH.
c. Start Pump and backwash approximately two minutes, or until water out waste line appears clean.
d. Shut off pump.
e. Set Control Valve to RINSE.
f. Start pump and operate for 20 seconds.
g. Shut off pump.
h. Set Filter control valve to FILTER.
i. Proceed as described in Pre-Coating section to add fresh D.E.

I run three cycles of BACKWASH and RINSE to clear as much DE as possible. Try running BACKWASH for about 1 minute with three cycles.

I wish mine had those settings. I only have backwash. I added another 2 pounds, for a total of 4 pounds, post backwash.
