CYA in the Aqua Genie chlorine tub?

Hi all,

So, previous house, previous pool was fiberglass and I usually just dumped the dry CYA into the deep end. Brush it around a couple of times a day and after a few days, it was dissolved to the point of not being visible. I was never that concerned about hurting the surface of the fiberglass pool and never had any problems.

But now, new house, and new pool being built. It will be a 20x40 vinyl liner pool with 2 Aqua Genie skimmers (my builder uses them and I haven't seen any argument against them) and a main drain. I don't think I'd be comfortable dumping CYA onto the liner. I notice the AGs have a little compartment for chlorine tablets which I will not be using as I'll have a salt system, and I was curious whether anyone's ever put CYA in there? Am I being clever? Or is that not going to work very well?

Disclaimer: as I said this pool isn't built yet, so I haven't actually seen the AGs in person...

Use the sock method for adding CYA to the pool. Save your equipment and pool surface.

Its a gimmick IMO. Wide mouth skimmers work like a champ. Unless it stops the breeze that kills skimming on any pool, it's no better.

Then so many only run the pump for 4 to 6 hours a day and any skimmer sits there idle. It's the 18 hours off why stuff sank to the bottom, not the skimmer.

Perhaps, but I will pick my battles. I'm already telling the builder I'm going to install automation and salt systems he doesn't carry, and asking him to install light niches but no lights so I can install the ones I want, etc. The AGs may not be better than regular skimmers and returns but they don't appear to be worse, and they're not exactly expensive. There's a point where I don't want to micromanage and create complexity for negligible gain.

The PB is building *your pool*. If the PB wants to pay to build his pool at your house, he is welcome to do so. You'll have to settle on things, but it'll be free, so.

I agree i wouldn't die on the aquagenie hill, but don't for one second settle for anything you won't be happy to live with.
