SWG for Above Ground Pool not marketed as SW

I am considering switching to SWG. I noticed, however, that some pool companies seem to market above ground pools as “saltwater” or not with SW being more expensive because of anti corrosion items like special paint and stainless steel, but that seems like a marketing gimmick.

I don’t see how salt at the required concentrations does anything more than liquid chlorine. I’m not saying salt doesn’t corrode in the abstract. It does. But so does Chlorine. I don’t see how salt should corrode more than chlorine assuming same ppm free Cl2–especially at the salt ppms we are talking about.

I tried searching for a post on this so apologize if it’s already been addressed.

You are correct. Manufacturers stating a pool is special for salt water is marketing and an upsell to charge more for little difference.

Pools manufacturers who say their pool is not to be used with salt water are saying they use cheap materials and want to discourage warranty claims.

I'm a little late here but when we bought our new pool there was salt friendly and not salt friendly pool manufacturers, we bought a salt friendly. We bought it because it was cheaper and we liked the dealer more.

The only difference I can tell is our pool has resin uprights, top rail and bottom rail vs the not salt friendly pool. Is there a difference in how the steel wall is protected - I don't know. I never tested the salt content in our last pool using liquid chlorine and Trichlor pucks to see how much salt there was in the pool ... it would have been interesting.

We have had salt on both salt friendly and regular above ground pools. The salt friendly resin pool collapsed at the 7 year mark from rust around the outside of the pool at the skimmer area (after we sold the house). Our first pool, cheapest above ground you could buy, rusted out in about the same amount of time. Both had salt systems. My advice is go for it, and keep an eye out for rust, and if you have aluminum top rails, spray paint the underside of them with a rustoleum paint.

I switched to swg, A real system starts at 1700 and will save you some money.
You have to manage chemicals way closer and watch csi so the plates don't grow crud on them

If I could do over I would stay liquid chlorine and get my cya from tablets ( its about a 50/50 usage)
Use tabs when your not home and add liquid when you are.

The difference is I have 80 dollars of salt in my pool and cant drain it in the winter now.
It really comes down to how expensive your water is.

It doesn't. Don't let someone else try to sell you snake oil.
I'm on year 3 for salt.
