220 volts. Doesn't it matter which wire goes to which terminal. I have a multimeter but don't know much about how to use it.

You really can't go by just the wire color..
In 'general' two black wires would mean that your voltage is 240 volts.. In which case it does not matter which wire goes to which Hot input connection.
Do you know if your supply voltage is for 240 or 120???
