Hi there,

We're looking at adding a heat pump to our system. I was under the impression that the IntelliCenter could call for both heating and cooling using RS-485, however the new UltraTemp HXi models don't support serial, only a dry contract input for on/off.

I've been talking to Pentair support, but their suggestion so far has been to manage cooling manually through the heat pump mobile app. I would prefer to have this automated, and "just work" as required keeping the pool at the right temperature without having to check and manually activating cooling mode through the app when required.

I note the board for the HXi model also has RS-485 terminals and seem to connect to the WiFi and "controller" terminals on the schematic, but they're not documented and support are saying they're not supported. Perhaps included for future updates?

Hoping someone here knows how to get around this - at this stage it looks like RS-485 is being phased out on heat pump in favour of simple on/off connected to the GAS dry contact, but that seems like a pretty significant step backwards in functionality from the previous UltraTemp heat pumps that worked over RS-485.

Thanks :)

Welcome to TFP.

It looks to me like the UltraTemp HXI HP is a white labeled product specifically for the Australia and New Zealand markets. Pentair is probably not manufacturing it and puts their brand on it, so it does not have Pentair proprietary RS-485 support in it.

Do you have any environmental or energy regulations requiring an inverter heat pump?

Thanks - that makes a lot of sense, and taking a closer look it appears to be the same underlying OEM model as used by another popular brand in the AU/NZ market - EvoHeat.

Primarily looking for efficiency to save running costs and power it largely by our excess solar generation. Ideally want a unit that can also cool the water as it ends up getting quite warm in the peak of summer, even without a blanket - had some chemistry issues last season due to the high water temperatures.
