Winter Issues AGP -water leak and ice

I have an above ground pool that was closed by a pool company before winter. It is covered and was drained downed below the skimmer. I’ve recently heard water coming out, and I can see it coming out the return line I’m guessing that the plug has come out and water is being displaced because of the ice on the cover. I’ve tried as much as possible to keep water and ice off the cover, but this year has been more challenging than the most. I had hoped it would melt enough today as it close to 50 degrees, but still not melting enough to pump off any water. We have a few days above freezing ahead but nowhere near 50 and still getting to freezing some nights. Before posting here I contacted the pool company and they said the best bet is to just wait it out, but to try to keep getting the ice and water off the cover.

My questions to the group are:

  • Is there any safe way to speed the melting process such as salt or a way to heat it? I have seen mats that people use on ramps and walkways and wondered if there was something similar for a pool cover.
  • I know that typically you should divert water away from the pool. However I’m hesitant to attach a hose in case we freeze again. What do you suggest?
Thanks in advance for your help!

The water coming out has nothing to do with being displaced but all to do with another option for water to leave. Where do you see the water and some good pictures. Perhaps there are other options but fill in the blank with pictures first, then we can only see if there's something externally possible.

Sorry I didn’t know what term to use. I just thought that if the cover wasn’t pushing down as much the water might not come out. This is the only picture I have. It is coming out the return line which is under my deck and hard to get to.

'Catch' the water to divert it instead. Use a flexible gutter spout, one of those gutter wedge thingies, a long piece of slate propped up with a brick on the pool side, drill a hose into a 5 gallon bucket and let it drip into that....... get creative. You don't want to saturate the ground under the wall. (y)

Thanks! I put a bucket to catch the water and a pool cover siphon in the bucket to get water out of the bucket and directed away from the pool. Here’s hoping the weather gets better so I can get the cover cleared off and get this water to stop.
