Liquid Chlorine
Download PoolMath and configure your pool. It will tell you how much to add to get 3ppm.

Brush then vacuum.

Post your test results after 24 hours and we'll help with recommendations.
@PoolStored I am a new pool owner and trying to figure out the chemicals. I have been taking to Leslie’s pool store but i really want to learn it myself. So I have a chlorinator that i currently have tabs in, but I have been reading that most recommend liquid chlorine?

First thing to do is get a test kit. Order one today. Link-->Test Kits Compared

We recommend liquid chlorine or a salt water chlorine generator. You can use tabs, but they add CYA. The only way to get CYA out is to replace water. Continual use of tabs require water replacement, when CYA gets to high.

We are early in the season, so it is fine to use some tabs now, as your CYA is likely low, but without a test kit, we don't know. So best course of action is to turn off the chlorinator and add 3ppm of liquid chlorine a day until your kit arrives. Then test and post a full set of results.

Can you post a picture of your pool water today, and fill out your signature.

Probably dumb question but what is 3ppm?

There are NO dumb questions here...

3 parts per million.

Download pool math, configure your pool, in the menu, there is an "effects of adding tool" It will tell you "when I add X amount of Y chemical, what it does to your pool water.

Use liquid chlorine as the chemical, play with the amounts until it results in adding 3ppm of FC to your pool.

Think of it as a dosage tool.

FC is measured in ppm. Is that what you are asking?
Did my signature complete?
No.

One more question is bleach the same as liquid chlorine? I have put power powder plus 73 in prior as instructed by pool store
Suspend the use of powdered products. Yes, they are the same. Are you on an iPhone? If you go to the app store and update the app, the new selection is liquid chlorine. You can use this app and use bleach.

You should try to buy and use liquid chlorine. Bleach these days have additives that are no nos...if you can only find bleach in the store, post it up and we'll tell you if good. No CLOROX, no softeners, no fragrances...just bleach.

Ok not sure why the app isn’t updated and why my signature isn’t complete

OK!!! With TA and pH, just manage the pH. It will rise naturally. When you lower pH with Muriatic acid, you will lower TA at the same time. pH will rise over time. As you manage pH, your TA will come down. Leave pH alone right now. Any pH in the 7s. is fine. When it gets to 8, reduce it to 7.6 with muriatic acid. Rinse repeat...might take a couple weeks, but when TA gets around 80, only reduce pH to 7.8.

So just leave it all alone for now? How often do you test your water and will I do the same for my spa. I really appreciate your help- this has been stressing me out and the pool stores have been awful!
