Pool Temp and Opening

HD, Lowes Walmart are all between $20 and $25 for 4 or 5 lb bags.

I get my puritech over the winter for $2 lb from Amazon. I wasn't even looking this winter, it popped up as a 'you also might like' thingie. Lol. So a 25lb bag came a few days later and is ready to go when the time comes.
Exactly what I get as well!!

Goodness. How long is your season? My water is already swim temp.
generally we open mid may and close mid October, so not too bad. we do have to heat the water to swim in May or June. or if you want to swim at more than 78. this year we are opening tomorrow. But I'm in Michigan.

ok good! We are considering always opening late April but the water will definitely be 40-50 degrees at that time. I love the idea of seeing the pool earlier.
I have opened with pool water that was 35. as soon as we know the ground won't refreeze we open. I run my pump on a low RPM 24/7 anyway so the water is always moving.

+1. This past week I woke up to 35, 32 and 30. But 34k gallons of pool water in the 50s didn't blink.

Running 24/7 kept an endless supply of 50 degree water through the equipment.

so that's the question. how do you know the ground won't refreeze? I mean the safe planting date in Michigan is like May 15, which is also when most pools open. but plenty open now. Of course, I'm opening today and there's a freeze warning tonight, but I know the ground won't freeze....maybe if I open in april to clear water next year and won't be running the pump 24/7 I should run it at night in case?

Nope! Trichlor are the pucks. They take a lot longer to dissolve. I’m talking about dichlor granules. Both are stabilized chlorine products, but dichlor will increase CYA much faster. Just make sure to brush really good after adding it to your water!
Learned something new 😀

The ground insulates itself. It can dip below freezing for the night no problem because it takes several days in the 20s to cool the earth.

A fluke cold snap could return but it probably won't this late in the game.

ah ok, even in the cold tundra of Michigan that is unlikely to happen in late April.

once the ground is not frozen here 3 feet down it isn't refreezing. it would take multiple multiple days. I'm just going on past years of experience of my buddy who owns an excavation company. he digs in foundations and does underground utility work and he always have said once that 3 foot frost zone is gone we are good. top inch or 2 might refreeze but to have a deep freeze again in nepa just doesn't happen.

Pfft…rookies…get a super long bit, cut off the working end….no more bending over lol. Step on the spring to hold it in place then let your hammer drill turn the screw down, once you’ve got one side down the opposite side is easy. Once all anchors are flush with deck, pull cover off pool then piano fold it back, then two folds to the Centre and put away until fall. No they don’t require cleaning for storage. Bigger cover, follow the above but put them on a dolly for transfer to garage or pool house.

+1 I use 2 -12 inch extensions. One is a quick disconnect in the drill and the other extension that connects into to QD uses set screws to lock in the appropriate hex bit in its chuck.
