I raised the CYA to 30 and started SLAM yesterday. Got FC to 10.5 (target 10) and CC was 3. Tested two more times throughout the day yesterday and FC did not drop and CC did drop down slightly to 2.5 last night. This morning, FC was 7.5 and CC 3. I added chlorine to get to 10 again. Midday FC is 9.5 and CC 2.5. I added a small amount of chlorine to get to 10. Just making sure I’m doing this correctly. Water looks the same. Cloudy, but I can see the bottom pretty well. There is also some foam/bubbles at the deep end. Never seen that before.

Good job testing and replenishing FC multiple times a day. Just a couple of points:

  • With a CYA of 30, your SLAM level is 12 not 10
  • I wouldn't mess with the CC or any other test besides FC until your pool is crystal clear
  • Make sure you are running the pump 24/7 and brushing daily since algae forms a protective layer and you want to brush off that layer so the chlorine can get in there and do its job.

Thank you! I misread the target, so thanks! I did have CYA about 20 at one point so might have ran the wrong number in the calculator.

Yes, running pump 24/7, SWG is off, been brushing, vacuumed out large debris, and running robot. It’s amazing what still gets in there over the winter even with an auto cover.

Was concerned about foam/bubbles. Hopefully when algae completely cleared out, that goes away.

Make sure your using plain bleach or chlorinating liquid. Not clorox or houshold bleach with soap or fabric softeners as those may make bubbles.

Reread the post above by JJ_tex. Very valuable info.

Make sure you are complying completely with SLAM procedure........especially about replenishing you FCX to 12ppm each time you test.

Brush often. Watch your filter psi.

Keeping your FC at 12 ppm will eventually get rid of form but it may take a few days.

Stay the course :)

Thanks all! I’ve successfully passed the overnight test. Water is crystal clear. But CC is 1. It was .5 yesterday. Water has been clear for several days. I’ve vacuumed, brushed, and cleaned filters along the way. Any advice?

Thoroughly cleaned testing vials. Restested with same result. Passed another overnight test and CC is still at 1. Not sure what else to do?
Also, it’s a beautiful day here in central IL and the kids want to swim. I’m at SLAM level free chlorine. Pool is open and it’s sunny, so assume it will start coming down on its own. Ph is a bit low at 7.3. Assume if kids get in, it will start coming back up too. All that to say, is it safe to let them swim?

Yes! Go swimming!

1 CC is not a call to SLAM but rather a "heads up" that chlorine is still working a little on a few remaining organics. You passed the test yesterday when you got to .5 ppm CC and you will likely go back down to that soon

Why do you think kids swimming will elevate pH?

You are correct. It may not help much but your thinking is solid.

There is a process in Pool School to aggressively raise pH bur I would see if the kids can do it for you.

Any pH in the 7's is just fine so you could leave it alone as well.
