Maintaining a pool with well water

I have a new pool. Just put water in last Friday and have been brushing ever since. Filled with well water. PB did the start up and added chemicals. I know he did use some sort of metal out. 2 days in and water was a light green along with the typical cloudiness from brushing new plaster. Pb said no chlorine for the first 3 days. No problem. 4 days and I start the auto chlorination with pucks. And added liquid chlorine. Next morning the water was brown.

Is this something I am gonna have to deal with the rest of my life? What can I do to deal with the metal in the well water with frequent topping off to maintain the level?

You have iron in your well water.

The metal out kept the iron in solution and the addition of the chlorine caused a rapid pH change that released the iron and turned the pool brown. The iron may go back in solution in a few days as the pH drops but it will still be in the water.

The metal out sequestrant will need to be renewed every few weeks or the iron can deposit on the pool surfaces and stain them.

Here are ways to filter iron out of water…

If you can get iron free water trucked in the best thing would be to drain the pool and fill it with iron free water. Then use filters to try and minimize the iron added when you top off the pool from evaporation.

Otherwise you will need to learn to manage and filter the iron in your pool water.

I will go get some polyfil today.

With it being a pool, how soon can I start managing the chemicals?

I will be starting from scratch on all of it. I do have the Taylor kit and this app so it won't be that hard.

Is there a sequence of operation getting it all balances or do I do a shotgun affect by trying to get all numbers in the box at ounce?

You should be following a plaster startup up guide to properly cure the plaster during its first 30 days and then transition to TFP recommended levels.
