Pump replacement this weekend

My current pool pump keeps tripping the breaker. A electrician has looked at it and states that the electrical panel is in good working condition and that the pump looks like it has a lot of "wear and tear" on it (it has been rebuilt already). He also noticed that the Liquidtite connection was wrapped with electrical tape at the pump. I've included some pics of the current setup, and the pump I will be replacing it with. Any thoughts or guidance is appreciated.

Good morning. I would replace that pump. Not only are single speed motors a total energy hog, they are no longer legal to use as a replacement in CA and many other states. Start looking at the various Variable Speed Pumps out there. Of course there are several models from the big names like Hayward, Pentair, etc, but there are many other newcomers like Calimar, Black & Decker and much more that are becoming more competitive.

Is the pump breaker GFCI.

You getting a GFCI trip or over current trip?

How many amps is the breaker?

You will have to replace the liquidtite with a new pump so why not fix it now and see if it gets your pump running?

Thank you for providing this information. Do you mind giving me a soft recommendation on a brand and model # of a pump you recommend?

The GFCI is not tripping, the main breaker is tripping (the white box next to the pool pumps). I have two switches next to my timer. One labeled "filter" and the other labeled "lights". The 'filter' switch keeps tripping and getting stuck.

Show me pics of the filter switch that is tripping.

We would be happy to. It would help to know more about your pool. For example, how big is it (gallons)? Do you have any other water requirements like a fountain, bubblers, solar, or perhaps a cleaner? It looks like you might have a spa correct? Any significant elevation changes from pool to pad?

With more info, we can help get you in the right ballpark. Keep in mind VSPs are completely adjustable which is nice. So as an example, if you got a 3hp and felt it might be too strong at any given time you could simply reduce the rpm speed. Be sure any new pump selections have the correct plumbing fittings and voltage requirements to meet your pad's electrical supply (220v versus 120v).
