I found a leak in my variable speed pump...but how to fix?

Hi Fellow Pool People.
I was losing pressure in the basket of my variable speed pump.
1. I checked the o-ring, coated it with that vaseline-type stuff, and put it back. Same issue.
2. I brought over a bucket of water, and poured it around various places. On the main pump part (see illustration--I marked up an existing image on this forum), there is air coming out of the area circled in red. The black round thing fell off in my hand. So I'm thinking I need a new one of those? Do I need a pro to fix this or is it a DIY project?
I'd appreciate a swift reply as it's Wednesday and I have a party Saturday. I don't want an algae-full pool for it :(

Thanks for your help in advance.

There is a gap between the drive and the motor to allow air to blow.

The shroud is designed to blow air between the motor and drive.

You can see that the shroud is a larger diameter at the top.
