I personally haven't heard of application and acid wash the same day.
A 'hot start' is dropping the pH really low after the pool is full. Hot starts are primarily used for cosmetic exposure of the pebble aggregate. It's more intrusive to the surface than other startup methods - but it seems to be done a lot as it's faster/cheaper for the pool builder.

Maybe I have it backwards, because I watched him put 3 gallons of acid in and as he was doing it he was saying that a lot if builders pour a ton of acid in and its harmful.
