Why am I Losing Sand?

At the beginning of the season I took apart my sand filter. I washed and cleaned everything and there were no noticeable cracks or breaks in any of the fingers. Sand was replaced with #20 silica sand from Leslie's Pool. I'm constantly getting sand all over the bottom of my pool and after backwashing for a few minutes this is the pile of sand that's left on the street.

Where else could this be coming from?

Since this only started happening when you changed the sand, things to come to mind include:
- Too much sand
- Bad batch of sand; too fine
- Lateral or hub connection issue
- Natural process of screening out the finer particles.

But, I just noticed you said it happens after backwashing. You mean after both backwashing and rinse correct? You are doing a full rinse for a good 30 sec or more once clear in the sight glss correct?

This is year three with this pool and filter and I've had this problem from the beginning.

I'm not sure at what point (both?) The sand is coming out. I don't have a sight glass but today I did backwash for a minute then rinse for a minute.

So this large amount of sand was after that process. I get small amounts of sand distributed throughout the pool during normal filtration also and when the pump is running the filter sounds like sand is rattling around inside the valve. Is that normal?

I found this thread and it sounds like the last reply might be part of my issue.

I have PVC running from my filter drain so I can drain / vacuum / backwash out to the street. There's a ball valve to prevent critters from getting in there and every time I open that valve to backwash water comes out even though the filter valve is still set to filter.

The MPV was going to be my last item on the list to check. The fact you are seeing water leaking out to WASTE when it is not supposed to is an indication something isn't sealing correctly. While some Intex products don't allow much repair options, I believe the MPV's spider gasket is still one of those items you can replace. Certainly worth checking.

I think I'm going to start with that gasket. It's an "outdoor pro" sand filter from waterway plastics and they have parts available it looks like.
