Discovered my pool was the watering hole that worms go to die in over the winter. Why are there so many!?

So yesterday was day 1 of opening my pool. Did SLAM and brushed the thick algae off the bottom and walls. Today was day 2 and time to vacuum up all the dead algae. Going towards the deeper end, it was impossible to see to the bottom so I just did a blind vacuum and threw the robot in to clean whatever was left. As I pack everything up, I check the skimmer basket expecting dead algae and HOLY heck I FOUND A WORM GRAVEYARD. This was disgusting and it's not even all of it. My robot has worms stuck in it's brush and filter. I'm expecting more worm carcasses scattered on the floor once the water clears.

I got some worms here and there last year. Why did so many decide to come drown themselves over the winter?
