Coping Grout

Hi all,

I'm in the throws of resurfacing the pool deck of my ~60 year old pool. Having now ground the paint off the pool deck and coping, I need to fill the area between each coping tile.
The original grout was intact, however a few had some small cracks. Hence I have dug and ground out the existing grout and am wondering what is the fastest/best stuff to use between each coping tile? The pool equipment dealer near my home said just use hydraulic cement - given the fact there are no expansion issues between the coping tiles and I don't need a flexible joint there, it would seem hydraulic cement is a good solution since its incredibly easy to work with.

I previously purchased Rapid Set Polyether Non-Sag Sealant and Adhesive to use for this , however I like the hydraulic cement idea because its the easiest solution, incredibly strong, and matches the surface texture of the adjacent coping tiles. I've attached a photo of the area I'm trying to fill below.

Note that I did not remove of the existing grout as it seemed entirely unnecessary.

Thoughts anyone??? Thanks in advance!

Grout goes between the tiles, but you should have a flexible expansion joint between the coping and the pool deck.

thank you for the reply. Yes I’m using self leveling sikaflex sealant for that and sikaflex -1A white for inside the pool to coping sealant.

It’s just between the coping tiles I want to be sure hydraulic cement is ok to use? . If I use the polyether I’ll also have to sprinkle with silica sand so it doesn’t look stupid. All in all I am 80-90% leaning toward just using the hydraulic cement and getting in with my life.

Hydraulic cement here is much darker color than standard concrete and much more expensive. It also cures insanely fast so it would be hard to grout all the tile like that. (You’d have to mix a small batch for each tile or two). If all that’s ok for your use then there’s no problem doing so.

Great! Thanks for the confirmation. Yes, I know I’ll have to do multiple batches and going to do the top before I do the wrap around lip that goes to the inside of the pool. The color difference is fine - I’m going to be painting or coating the whole deck and coping when this nightmare is over.

With that in mind, any coating or paint you recommend? I’d like something just a LITTLE off white and that can be repaired or change the color later if I screw up or hate the look. Going to throw silica sand in the coating or paint or whatever to make the surface not dangerously slippery as well.

Maybe you have a different style of hydraulic cement over there? I’d have to make ~75 different batches of it because it literally hardens in ~120 seconds.

Not aware of any DIY coating that holds up long term. I’m considering a cement based top coat for mine as well as maybe sand blasting it to even out the texture. I’ve read cool-deck is a decent option but it’s $$$$.
