I can't believe it's not ammonia!

I have a mesh cover and opened to a swamp. Still had around 30ppm CYA when I closed with around 70ppm. I only pumped the pool water once this year around the beginning of March because it was getting high. When I opened it beginning of April, I didn't have to fill it at all.

If you ever want to check ammonia on the spot, go to a fish store and buy an API fish tank test kit that test for ammonia. I've only dealt with ammonia when I went without a cover and had a lot of leafy debris in the pool.

Its kind of a pain to deal with a pump on a solid cover but I wouldn’t want stuff getting in my pool & risking a swamp so I’ll take it. The automatic cover pump makes it alot easier.

Whereas up here, I'd rather not leave an automatic pump cover on in the ice/snow and would rather just clean up a bit in the spring. :) To each their own!
We don’t have too much of that so I can easily plan & remember to go remove it. It does become a dance sometimes! I think snow is pretty but after a week or two I’ve had my fill!

I tested cya today and it was 0... both times I test I let the water sit inside the house and warm up... any reason my cya would be 30 when I opened and 0 now? Fc holds. I brought fc up from 4.5 to 10 at 5pm. Tested at 6pm and it's 10. How is the chlorine not getting neutralized by the algae?

Yes, I've been exchanging water from vacuuming but that much? Hmmm...

Gonna ask a silly question- you put reagent in the bottle right?

Aside from that - maybe you’re just below 20…

Remember the 'mix the pool real well before we trust the results' part ? Yeah. ;)

But there's a bunch of reasons. If you went elbow deep with the first sample you were likely below the rain water level with 0.

If the pump was running / had ran a short time you stirred up some 'bottom' water that hadn't mixed well yet.

Cold water can lead to wonky results.

20 CYA is sketchy at best to decipher. It might look like 30, or 0.

A little progress each day is a good thing. If you can see the bottom and there is no large debris down there, you should be able to use your robot if you wish.
Thanks! I'm going to wait a bit.

I just brushed the pool and I'm going to let the filter do some more work. There was a lot more in the nook & crannies. Also backwashed. Going to keep an eye on skimmer sock, pump basket and filter pressure. Keep up the chlorine amd keep brushing. We'll see how it goes. Heading into work for a few hours...

Put that robot to work- do you have the pleated filter? If so, use it. It turns him into a roving cartridge filter. Your sand filter needs all the help it can get.
Brush the crannies & let him help with the rest.
