Screenlogic Lost Comm with VSF Pump and IC-40

Everything working perfectly on the pool and automation, just came home from 2 week trip to notice pool pimp wasn't running at 3pm in the afternoon. Go out to look and spa water is already starting to have a greenish tint to it, so pool pump hasn't run in several days... All other options that I normally have on Screenlogic I can use, "except" for pool pump and IC-40... Pool pump is in manual mode right now and it has been running 24 hours to re-circulate water... I have powered everything down, and gracefully brought it back up... Get power to the pump and IC-40, but pump will not start with Screenlogic and "scheduled" times (pool scheduled for 0700-1900 daily), but everything else works (sorry, know I told you that)... I have also unplugged the comm link from VSF pump and re-screwed it in...

Any other troubleshooting steps you guys may be able to suggest???

Attached pics of automation from my phone and the inside of the Pentair panel... Also, the pool pump light "DOES" come on when the scheduled time to turn on happens, and pump gets power, but has Zero RPMs...

Pump -- 011056 (about 1 month old)
IC-40 chlorinator (about 3-4 months old)

Pool and all other equipment was installed in late 2017

Thanks much

Roger V

Roger,

You have lost your com port. The problem is that anything connected to the com port can cause it to go bad.

Here is our standard test...

1. Turn off the power to the EasyTouch.
2. Remove everything connected to the com port except the pump. (Remove the connection to the surge card and to ScreenLogic) You can just remove the connectors, you do not need to take individual wires out.. You will have to move the pump's cable from the surge card and connect it to J20 in place of the jumper wire that is there now..
3. Turn the EasyTouch back on
4. Make sure the system shows it is in AUTO and Pool or Spa
5. Wait a couple of minutes and go look at the pump. What does the display show?? Does it say 'Display not active" or does the pump show an RPM screen? Or is the pump's screen blank?

Try that and report back with your findings.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks Jim!!! I am attaching a picture of some things marked up on the EZTCH8 Board... I only see one COMPORT, and that is connected to the surge card by 4 wires... I am pulling that connection from the EZ8 board??? I have what looks like the power cable, pull that white plug or turn off EZtouch in the house??? I have J7 highlighted in yellow, but don't see any connectors from the surge card that will plug into J7 for the pump... Also, when looking and taking pictures a few minutes ago, found another wire with a maroon clip exactly like the cables attached to J8 through J11, but it is not plugged into anything (and I can't really believe that would just come unplugged and is probably an extra cable, maybe??)

Thanks again, vr Roger V

Roger,

There are several places where you can connect to the single com port that the EasyTouch has..

The main card J20 has a 4 wire cable that goes to the Surge Card. The Surge Card has three additional com port connections that all connect to J20. One com port, with several connection points.

It appears to me your pump is connected to one of the Surge Card connections.. I suspect that your ScreenLogic is also connected to the Surge Card. The Surge card is internally connects the com port to the IC40.

All you need to do is remove the connector from J20 and remove the pump's cable from the surge card and then plug the pump's cable into J20. Just make sure the pins or colors are correct. This will mean that only the pump is connected to the J20 com port.

You have an unused relay so I assume that is where the extra relay cable goes.

I am not a fan of the guy who wired your EasyTouch. It looks for neat, but there is a diagram on the door that tells you which relay is which. Your installer did not follow that diagram. It is not a big deal, except to the next tech that comes along and doesn't understand what the first guy did.

Thanks,

Jim R.

So I don't screw anything up any further, here's what I am seeing and reading... First, want to make sure the attached picture is "indeed" the Surge Card!!!

Then, from EZTouch8 board, I unplug J20 connector that has 4 wires connected... I then unplug the same cable's other connector from the Surge Card (red rectangle), and the swap the plugs (same cable, just swapping out which is connected to each card maintaining the correct wire colors in the correct spots)???

Sorry for being so "dense" just don't want to mess anything up any more than what it is...

Thanks much

Roger,

First.. You do not want to plug and unplug things with the power on. Not because you will get shocked, but it could damage the RS-485 chips.

Yes, that is the surge card...

At the bottom of the surge card is the cable from the pump. It only has a yellow and green wire. Unplug that cable.

Then unplug the connector on the main card J20.

Plug the yellow and green cable that you just unplugged from the surge card into the main card J20. Just make sure the yellow and green wires go the yellow and green pins.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Yes sir, copy all!!! That was my intent (power off), but wasn't sure about the which plugs where... I just swapped the plugs and the yellow/green is now in J20... After power back on, took about 20 or so seconds for "Schedule" to kick on, but it did, and pool pump started with automation... Below are pics of the panel and pump... Also, VSF 011056 has firmware version of 3.04-VSF... Is that latest, and does that make any difference???

Thanks much, vr Roger V.

Roger,

That tells me that your com port on the main card is working.

I suspect that your ScreenLogic has a bad RS-485 issue.

I suggest that you reconnect the pump to the surge card and the surge card to J20. (This should leave ScreenLogic disconnected..)

Try it and see if the pump works and that you can adjust the SWCG's output up and down using the main panel.

Let me know what you find.

I think 3.03 and 3.04 are bad, but you should contact Pentair to make sure for your specific pump.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks much Jim!!! Hooked everything back to orig, and pump is now working with automation!!! Also, I can adjust the settings on the IC-40 from the main panel and confirmed I could read the changes from my Screenlogic App... Pool installer is sending a guy out later this week to flash a new firmware version on the pump... Hoping this was all just one-time bug/glitch and that all is fine now... Really appreciate the assist!!!

Roger,

Well, I'm glad it is working. :goodjob:

But I had assumed that something on your RS-485 com port was bad, and it sounds like that is not true.

Do me a favor, and once they re-flash your pump, tell me what F/W they used.

Thanks,

Jim R.
