I just installed a SWG about 2 months ago and I'm still getting used to the variations in chemistry balance. My numbers look generally in range, but the final CSI result is strongly negative (about -0.66 this last week). That seems bad to me. How bad is that?

Tested just now:
FC = 6.5
pH = 7.5
TA = 60
CYA = 60
CH = 275
Temp = 56F

I have worked so hard to tweak all the numbers on that list to match the recommended SWG balance levels, with the exception of the CH.

I have a plaster pool, and I have never intentionally added or removed calcium from the water in 10 years. Also, I think this is the lowest I have ever seen CH. Is this the culprit?

I started shopping calcium chloride earlier tonight, but honestly I have no idea if that's the best path to remedy the situation. If this is a good place to place my attention, then what is the best source of calcium chloride? I have never had to purchase it.

Any other feedback on areas I should focus to keep my chemicals in line?

Cold water will tend to drive the CSI more negative. Letting pH rise to 7.8 or 7.9 will help offset the effects of cold water.
If you are using PoolMath app, then you can click on CSI and do some changes to pH, CH, etc to see how that affects the CSI. Having -0.66 is not terrible for short period of time - so keep testing at least weekly and make adjustments as needed.

Add a little calcium and let the pH naturally drift up to ~7.9 and your CSI will be great. Aeration will speed up the pH rise.

What's the TA and CH of your fill water? (I get all my calcium from my fill water.)

Fill out your signature when you have a minute.

THis older version of Pool Math makes it easier to see what you have, but at the same time see what tweeks do for the big picture.

On the calcium addition - I have seen that some types of deicer can be used to add calcium chloride. However, some of those products have little to no calcium chloride. I would not want to add too many extra unknown chemicals to my pool water I am assuming, so can you suggest a good brand to use for adding the calcium?

I aerated the water a bit and have already raised my pH to 7.6 or 7.7, so this is easy enough. Will keep doing it a couple more days.

In my tap water:
TA = 110 ppm
CH = 200 ppm

Will fill out my signature shortly too. Thanks!

Lots of places to start, but I would recommend this for you first
Nobody wants to add unknown chemicals; but Snow Joe works fine for most of us if you get the right one as shown in the thread.

Dowflake, Puri-tech, Snow Joe. Gonna be tough in Dallas as you guys don't get the snow and ice. Easy here in Ohio. For this, in Dallas, I would recommend a pool store (ugh...from me no less).

Alternatively, 25lb for $18, isn't all that bad. Delivered. I get 40# bags of dowflake from our pool store, I think for $35.
