Water depth vs temperatures

We used to have a 4ft deep Above Ground round frame pool years ago and would struggle to warm the pool, it was always around 74-78 degrees even on 95 degree days, so i eventually made a heating system by using black irrigation tubing and a submerible pump to push it through (adds about 5 degrees after about 6 hours), and/or use a pool cover but that got annoying to remove replace on an almost daily basis. Lets fast forward now...I bought a 4'x4' 1ft deep frame pool for my daughters turtles and found that the water gets overly hot on the same 95 degree day, i had to put a board to shade more than half the pool to keep it under 85 degrees... That got me thinking about the temps in our swimming pool. So recently we've been looking to buy another Above Ground (rectangular), but this time around m thinking to get only a 3ft deep pool, as to aid in achieving warmer temps. Id like to avoid pumping water through the black irrigation tubing if possible. So is my thinking correct in that the shallower pool will be naturally warmer?

It's a good question of what the key mechanical characteristics that allow for greater heating.

I don't know the answer but it would seem to me that if you had a one-inch deep pool of the same volume as one-foot deep pool of the same volume, that the shallower pool would warm more quickly than the deeper pool (assuming everything else stays the same).

But is that true that a shallow pool warms more quickly than a deeper pool?

If you had warming conditions for infinite time, I would think both would eventually warm to the exact same temperature - but you only have have a day to warm the pool before it cools overnight.

Therefore we'd likely have to take into account cooling, where I would think the opposite effect would occur.

Suddenly, it got complicated. :(

The more shallow a pool is the faster it warms up. My question would be do you want to sit in 3' of water?? To me that would be like sitting in a kiddy pool almost and you can't swim in 3' of water. You'll scrape knuckles.

Covering a pool with a solar blanket at night helps keep the pool warmer.
