My friends husband passed and she has been trying to clear the pool. Yup it’s green. I understand she added 3 1 lb bags if granular shock , a gallon of Clorox Algicide. Some dead stuff in the button now. I told her a good vacuuming to get the dead stuff out to start. I checked the chemicals with my TFP Kit.
PH 8.7
CL 0 👀
TC 0
TA 100
CYA 5 👀
I am thinking getting the PH down 10ppm
Then liquid chlorine 4 gallons
I will take any input.
Thanks in advance
21k fresh water above ground

Firstly hopefully she knows exactly the pool capacity otherwise you need to proceed with caution not to overshoot. For starters use muratic acid for the PH lowering. You want to raise the cya to 30 and the slam away with liquid chlorine. Do not add anything else she has in stock.

You have errors in your test results. What are those "eyeball" symbols. CYA cannot be 5. it can be zero or 20+ but not 5

TFP kit cannot test for pH above 8.2.......how did you get 8.7

There is no result for CH.

Let's get your results right first and then we can advise.

Unless she plans on doing the maintenance moving forward you might suggest she hire a service. Either that or get rid of the pool. If she's not interested or willing that's going to be a swamp. I'm Sorry for her loss I suspect the pool is not her priority.

My condolences for your friend.

The the pH a typo? 8.7 is not measurable with the TPF kit. Neither is 5 as a CYA either.

Is her loss recent? If so, like said above, her pool is probably not on her list of things to pay attention to.

Are you close enough to her (distance and emotionally) and do you have the time to take care of it for her for a while? That would be a very nice gift for her if you are. If she's anything like my dear friends who recently lost their 25 yr old son, she has so much food that well meaning people have brought over that she can't fit it in her fridge.

If you want to take it over, a SLAM is necessary. If your friend is up to doing it herself, you can teach her, starting with
1. buying her own appropriate test kit
2. Getting pH down to 7.2
3. getting CYA up to 30
4. Follow the instructions to the letter. https://www.troublefreepool.com/blog/2018/12/12/slam-shock-level-and-maintain/. This may take a few weeks with multiple tests a dosing a day.

If neither you or she can do this, a service until closing is a good idea. Then maybe she can start fresh in the spring.

I tested w the kit.
PH was 8.2 but darker pink
I had it retested at the store just to see how much higher it was - 8.7
I tested the cya with the kit
It was full and I could still see the dot very clearly. I don’t have it in front of me but it’s 20? When it’s full? So I had the store check that too and they recorded 5
CH was in range, again I don’t have it in front of me.
The eyeballs are OMG!
Thanks
I have used the TFP kit all summer on my pool and it’s been super clear w very few chemicals. Thank you.

I will help her get it right. I tested w the TFP kit then had the pool store retest. That accounts for the numbers.
Once it is clear she will be able to care for it. I am around the corner so I will get it done. I will recommend a kit also.
My test
PH 8.2
CYA 20

Stay out of the pool store. Learn to test and report accurately

So, your test results should read

pH - 8.2+ (stay out of the pool store)
TA - 100
FC - 0
CC - not reported
CH - not reported
CYA - 0

We really need to get the missing tests so we can help.

Post results in the format above so we can understand and advise.....no more eyeballs!

Ok no more eye balls but you're raising eyebrows now.
Hard to detect CYA of 20 but get enough stabilizer to bring it up to 30 and get 5ppm FC in asap hoping nothing is brewing in the background. You can also lower the PH to the mid 7s via MA.

Thanks, I filled the cya tube to the top and could still see the black dot clear as day. Two solid days of rain ahead so waiting on that to pass. Thank you
