Hi all,

New here and tough to find answers online. I have a 3 season old Mastertemp 125 pool heater.

It was tripping the breaker now it will stay on but does not fire. It says ERR AFS on the screen.

My pool guy (original installer) came and took some bolt out and said it was full of water and the heat exchanger is bad.

I can get a new heater for about 1500 bucks, Or heat exchanger for about 600 online which comes with a new igniter and the entire kit.

I’m pretty handy and do not mind getting my hands dirty. What’s involved and how difficult is it to replace the heat exchanger?

Or am I better off just replacing the heater?

They said my water chemistry caused it. I am diligent with taking my water to the pool place and adding chemicals as needed. I am salt water. Never had any issues with my water and whatever needs added I always take care of it.

Very frustrated because the pool place where I get my water checked told me that I’m one of their better customers as far as keeping water quality good.

TIA.

Jim

Welcome to TFP.

We don't put a lot of faith in pool store chemistry tests. They may be accurate or they may lead you astray.

I suggest you being doing your own testing using a Taylor K-2006C or TFT Test Kits

In general heat exchangers get damaged by low pH or by water flow greater then the 70 GPM maximum.

As far as my heater goes, I can not find anywhere online on the 125 exchanger replacement.

125 MasterTemp heat Exchanger is the same as the MasterTemp 400 just less coils.

Ideas? Worth it? How hard? I am pretty handy but a video would be nice!

I gave you a video in post #2.

Note that the MasterTemp 125 maximum flow is 70 GPM. Water flow rates exceeding that can erode the heat exchanger.

Thank you so much!

Did my blower or anything else get ruined the water leaking from the exchanger?

It looks like the new exchanger that is available online in multiple places comes with a new igniter and so forth. What was actually making the breaker trip? What was actually getting wet causing the GFCI to go out?

Cheers!

The air blower is above the coils so should not have got any water damage.

Could be. You will see the igniter in the burner can. So depending on how much water leaked it may have effected electrical stuff.
