Hello, I just moved into my house a week ago and it has a 23000 gallon in ground. The previous owner didn't take care of the pool so it looked like a swamp. I got the levels where they should be except for the free chlorine(which I'm working on) I need to backwash the sand filter but for the life of me can't figure out where to hook the backwash hose up to. This is my first pool and I'm determined to learn all about it and make it look great.

Welcome! It appears you already have a backwash line connected. It looks like the back line coming off the back of the MPV. Then the line turns to the right and comes to the front of the pad and appears to go into the ground. Maybe a drain or something?

That would seem to be an odd location for a backwash;/waste line flowing out next to the pool like that. But next time your filter pressure increases by about 25% to indicate it's time to backwash, take a look at that exposed pipe or any other potential run-off areas that waste water can flow to.

I agree on that hose sticking out of the ground as being in a poor location if it's the backwash line. Seems there has been some splicing of lines and the addition of the metal fittings and valves is less than optimal.

You have a significant pump shaft-seal leak. All that galvanized plumbing should be replaced with pool-rated plumbing (PVC fittings and valves, etc.) before you start having rust issues.

That's what I thought also. Why would they have it so close to the pool..don't know what it's for. It's not backwash or waste.

Turn the pump off, place the valve in "waste" position, turn the pump on for a short time, (watching the gauge, if it goes very high very quickly, turn it off immediately), see where the water

Gage never went high..stayed steady at 12..checked all around the yard still can't figure out where it's coming out at

Did you look in your neighbors yards too? Might go to a drywell. Since the filter is new you you, you may want to consider a deep clean of the filter once you get the pool under control. You would be surprised how much gets left behind after backwashing. You can also check to see if the filter has the correct amount of sand too. Usually a little sand gets washed out with each backwash.

On that pipe sticking up out of the ground you might try using a shop vac to suck air by taping the hose to the pipe and then see where you might get a sucking sound. Move the multi-port valve through it's different positions and also one at a time try the different valves returning them to the previous position after testing.
