What size filter/pump for 13,500 gallon 24' round AGP? It was a kit from home depot.
1hp pump, 18" sand filter currently. 1 skimmer, 1 return

I've had trouble with the far side of the pool and algae as if it doesn't get enough water movement over there. The filter/pump is located right by the skimmer and return so hoses are not that long. I was thinking of plumbing some 1.5" PVC.
The vacuum that connects to the skimmer doesn't seem to do all that great and was wondering if a 1.5hp pump would be better for that.
What automatic vacuum is recommended for an AGP with vinyl liner?
Would a cartridge filter be sufficient or should I go with a DE filter or stick with a sand filter?
What chemicals do you use for the chlorine? I had trichlore tablets but
I think the CYA level gets to high with those and have had a bad algae problem. But I want to get the filter/pump situated first.
Sorry for all the questions. I'm at a bit of a loss with reading conflicting info online.

Welcome to TFP.
Your filter has nothing to do with your algae or water chemistry problems. Changing your filter is not going to fix anything you described.

I suggest you read ….

Get a good test kit - Taylor K2006C or TFT Test Kits

Download PoolMath

Post what your water chemistry is from your test kit and we will advise what to do next.

You might want to read up on the SLAM Process as that is the way we deal with algae.

I know its not the cause of the algae i had right now, that's a chemical issue but i was reading different things on what size filter and pump I should have for my size pool and wanted your guys opinion on that. I've read quite a few people say the filter isn't big enough and a higher HP would have better suction for the vacuum. Just wanted to ask on here your thoughts.

You have algae clogging your filter.

Get your water chemistry fixed and then evaluate your pool plumbing.

Your 1 skimmer and 1 return is more of a restriction then your pump or filter.

A 1 HP pump is more then enough.

How often have you backwashed your filter.

What is your clean filter PSI and what is your current filter PSI?

What specific model pump and filter do you have?

My old filter was 1 HP and it did a good job with 1 1/2 inch hoses. There was plenty of circulation on my 24 foot pool to the point any debris that fell into the pool would end up in the center. That was if and when my filter was producing the right flow, if dirty the flow was reduced a lot and it barely moved the water.

Chlorine distributes throughout the water. Any time I got algae was when I slacked, all I needed to do is add chlorine and brush the walls and floor and the problem went away. But that is assuming it didn't become a swamp yet.

You should be fine with the HP, listen to the other's advice on testing and pool chemistry.

I want to say the pressure was around 9-10psi new but I didn't write it down. It's been a few years. It was about the same now. But everytime I would turn the pump on high it would blow Crud back in the pool. I back washed it about once a week. But perhaps not long enough. I'm filling the pool today. The cya level was way high. I'll go through the test and start balancing it out.
