Hayward pump advice needed

Hello!
I have a Hayward PowerFlo Matrix two speed model SP15932s. Has been running on low, but not high. Hubby and I replaced the capacitor as the research I did indicated that could be the culprit. It ran great on high for a minute. We turned it off and replaced filter media to get back in business, and now we are back to only running on low. It runs perfectly fine on low, when we turn it to high it clicks and tries to turn over, but just doesn’t go. Kind of like when trying to turn on a car with low battery.

We have called numerous local places, but either getting told they don’t do that kind of repair or leaving a message and not getting a call back. So we are trying to see what else we can try to fix this. Hubby is very handy and can do electrical wiring (has a degree in ECE). So we are hoping someone here can clue us in on our next step. We are willing to replace the motor if that is the best course of action, but would like to salvage this one if we can. Any advice or direction is truly appreciated!

So we just went outside and turned it on again… and it is now working perfectly… 🤔

Does a capacitor need to charge somewhat like a car battery?

No, it should retain its energy immediately. I wonder if you are experiencing a temperature issue in the motor. I have a Waterway pump and a PowerFlo which are almost identical. One of them got very temperamental in the heat.

Glad it's working again for now, and low speed is fine. Mine is on low 24/7. But if it happens again post a pic of the motor label and we'll tag an expert or two for another opinion.

Thank you… it is actually rather cool here today and has not been too warm in general. The pump is about 7 years old. Was working great until last week… no noise or lack of power. Fingers crossed it still works tomorrow when I put it on for the day. We generally run the pump 8 hours a day. Bather load has been rather low this year as sadly we are just too busy to enjoy the pool as much as we usually do. We have had a mustard algae issue this year which has been frustrating. I am meticulous with keeping the water clean and healthy. It’s under control now but at first I could not figure out what it was. It’s not common in my area, but it got in somehow.

7 years is aright about that time where a motor may show signs of failure. Some go longer (some shorter), but you never know. If it acts-up again, you might just leave it on low for the rest of the season and deal with it next season. Ask Santa for a new pump. :)
